Only The Strong Survive

Ahanu 
"Humming for me." He shifted to a slightly more comfortable position. "You don't have to keep doing it if you don't want to."  

Charity
Charity shrugged. "I don't mind," she mumbled, pausing a minute before resuming her humming.

Ahanu 
He continued tracing invisible patterns on her hand, moving a little slowly because he was trying to sleep. The humming, paired with laying in her lap and holding her hand, made it kind of peaceful. He felt himself edge closer to sleep.

Charity
Charity switched to a different song, as by that time she had done the previous song five times (it was short).

Ahanu
He heard the song change but didn't say anything, because this one was as good as the last. His patterns were growing irregular, stopping and starting, as he slipped in and out of sleep.

Outlaw 
She woke up again and sighed. “Do pills stop working if they get old?” She wondered out loud, staring at the ceiling. 

Charity
Charity softly traced his neck with her fingers, looking down at him while still quietly humming.

Ahanu
He drifted into sleep again, this time not pulling out. A warm blackness settled over his mind, his brain finally resting the worrisome thoughts. No dreams meant no nightmares, which was always preferable. Though the blackness usually faded into a dream eventually. Ahanu's body went slack, once again his hold on her hand loosening. His head tilted to the side, his arm knocked away from his eyes and drooping down so that his fingers touched the deck. 

Charity
Charity kept on humming, pulling back the hand that was on his neck momentarily. She studied Ahanu's face, letting herself smile at how much she liked him. 

Outlaw
She sighed, rolling outta bed, then the date on the calendar caught her eye, and she stared at it, face having turned somber and haunted. She walked over to a drawer close to the door, the fringing on her chaps swishing slightly. She pulled out a blue candle, pulled a match from her pocket, and struck the match on her chaps, lighting the candle then setting the candle on the counter in a safe position.

Ahanu
A few minutes passed of peaceful sleep. Then he woke up, mildly irritated that he had. Ahanu sat up, releasing Charity's hand. "Do you want to do anything?" Ahanu asked, sliding back to his position sitting next to her. He wrapped a now-free arm around her. 

Charity
Charity relaxed into his side, glancing down at the ground. "Whatever you want to do is fine."

Ahanu
He nodded, sitting still for a couple minutes. Suddenly he lifted Charity partly off the ground, plopping her down in his lap. "Now we both can relax without one having to hold the other. You can lean back into me." He grinned, pleased with the idea.

Charity
Charity shook her head with amusement, leaning back into his chest. She was starting to feel pretty tired, which she expect to happen.

Ahanu 
"Hi," he chuckled, right next to her ear. He snuggled his head into the crook between her neck and shoulder. A deep breath brought her scent flying up into his memories to be remembered forever. He took another deep breath, giving a small rumble of content. His arms, wrapped around her and connected by his hands in front of her lower torso, gave her a small squeeze. He took a couple deep breaths again, burrowing his head the rest of the way in. Now with every inhale he could render himself even more helpless.
