Dog DNA test

#199216 Posted on 2019-01-27 19:07:34

My dog was abandoned on the side of the road when she was a pup, so we always wondered what she was. We thought maybe a Plott Hound mix....

So I found out you can get your dog DNA tested, and I got it for myself as a Christmas present. I know there are some genetics/dog breed fans on here, so I thought I'd share. I do not know how accurate these tests are, but everything makes sense. She is from the southern United States.

My dog is 10 months old and 45 pounds. (Results posted first then pictures of my baby)

Neat! I have thought about getting my one dog DNA tested because not even the vet had a guess on what he might be. When we got him he had paperwork from the shelter he came from and a vet the previous owners had taken him to and both had different mixes listed for breed. So really not sure what he is!

Your pup is super cute btw, such a sweet face!

Below is Meeko! :)

@Sagittarii Meeko is soo CUTE!! and the tests are a bit pricey but to me it was worth it. (If your dog's great grandparents were not purebred, then they can't accurately identify distinct breeds, just groups).

Thanks and that is interesting I didn't know that about the great grandparents having to be purebred. I don't care enough to actually spend the money on it, lol, I guess I'm just not that curious. Besides, when people ask what breed he is it is so much more fun to answer 'meeko the marvel mutt' or 'a wonder mutt' than an actual breed ;)

@Bandit - I cant see any pics :( :(

I don't know if that is every test, but for the one I did it is. If one great grandparent is purebred, the breed would show up as 12.5%....if the others are mixed, it would be 87.5% groups.

And I like your answers. Haha.

Yes, she is always picking up scents whenever we go for walks. I think it would be interesting to train her to track, but I have no idea how!

@Marigold Sunshine
Your pupper looks just like a mix of those breeds! Love the Catahoula. Great herding dogs.

@Olympea
I wanna say maybe an Akita pit mix? Has the face and ears of an Akita, but the jaws and broad head of a pitty... My best guess!

@snake I had no idea what  catahoula was! Do you think that's where her brindle came from?

@SnakeLady - I think it is possible he is part pit bull but I doubt Akita as he is rather small so that would surprise me.

The mixes that we have been told are Catahoula mix, Aussie Mix, and GSD/Pit Bull. No idea though, haha.

Ughhh puppies! : D

I'm not sure how accurate these tests are either, I know at least in horses they aren't. They just give a general direction as to where the breed comes from (which could be anything). Like for example, it'll say Spanish Mustang... A lot of horses come from Spanish descent so who knows!

Either way, what a cutie. I just wanna know where that brindle comes from because I LOVE that coat!
