Murder Mystery RP

Penn
He wanted to disappear into the forest floor. "A-alive. That was a hole." Thanks, captain obvious. Penn kicked the dirt off his shoe and kept going. "I'm not seeing much," he said.

Mei
She glanced back at a small sound and felt some relief to see Outlaw following them, the presence of the tall stranger somehow comforting. Turning forward again, she said to Penn, "Maybe you should take the flashlight, it might help? At least as far as not falling into holes." As reluctant as she was to give it up, it only made sense for Penn to have the light considering he was leading the way and actively looking for clues. 

Penn
Penn took his backpack off and dug around. He pulled out his special flashlight. "I've got one," he said, "but thank you." A thought crossed his mind and he flipped on the black light, shining it around the forest.

"Why weren't you using that before?" she asked, giving him an odd look as she stepped over a large tree root and paused beside him. When he turned the blacklight on, Mei smiled a little, internally laughing at herself for being surprised. Under her breath, she said, "Of course you have a blacklight in your bag, Vidocq."

Penn
I can't think when you flirt with me, he thought to himself. All the black light picked up was some trash. He made a second pass.
Almost beyond where he could see, more white peeked through the bushes. "There," he said. Feeling particularly brave, he smiled sheepishly at Mei. "I've got more than this in my bag."

Mei
He had a cute smile, as far as Mei could tell in the reflection of their lights. "Oh? Like what?" She barely acknowledged whatever it was he'd found with a brief glance, not super thrilled about the idea of going even deeper off the paths of the preserve. 

Penn
Penn forged ahead as he talked. "Fingerprint kit, glow in the dark paint, more blacklights, wireless laser tripwire system- a couple things."
He picked up the papers and switched his flashlight to a normal light.

Mei
As they stopped, she put her bow on her back so it would be out of the way. She leaned into Penn and reached up to tilt his hand, angling the envelope he was holding so that she could read the black font across the front of it. "Outlaw McCarty? Is that a name?"

Penn
Penn opened his mouth to reply, but nothing came out. He was very aware of her hand on his, and he didn't know if he was supposed to move. He couldn't, even if he wanted to.

Mei
"Charmant?" Mei glanced up at him apprehensively. "What is it?" 

Penn
Penn cleared his throat. "Nothing. Weird name. Um - that wouldn't be any of us, by chance?"

Outlaw
Her eyes narrowed as Mei read the name out loud. “Yes it would be.” She dryly replied to Penn, stepping forward to slip the envelope from his fingers. She studied it for a second before slitting it open with a finger, ignorant of the paper cut it caused. Blank. She studied the paper, suspicion seared into her brain. She looked up from the paper, staring into the forest, studying their surroundings while she pondered who would even know her full name. 

Penn
"O-oh. My apologies." He watched her carefully. "What does it say?"

Mei
She shifted slightly on her feet when Outlaw took the paper so she wasn't intruding as much into Penn's space, watching Outlaw as she opened the envelope. The expression on Outlaw's face was not reassuring, and Mei followed her gaze outward, searching the black for anything out of place.

Outlaw
She searched the forest again, seeing nothing out of place, but was not convinced. It felt wrong. It was too quiet, her mind could find no forest creatures that would usually be out and about stirring, and she didn’t like it. “It’s blank.” She replied to Penn, eyes returning to the tree it had been buried under. “And there’s an arrow.” She added, pointing to it.
