Windigo
As the lone horse finally slowed, Windigo tossed her mane. She studied the horse. She had slightly larger eyes, a pretty brown color that slightly popped against her black face. She watched the way the horse's jaw was set, and seeing how relaxed it was she concluded this horse was not angry - for now, at least. I'll probably take her back to the herd- unless she proves un-needed. Windigo snorted- it was a good thing she had decided to check the west-border and got side-tracked at the moment. Who knows what this horse wants.

Tango
Tango replied, "Quite so, I suppose." "-For both, foolish, and my mother." A grin cast across her face as she spoke though, she was quite proud of herself. So proud, she forgot about the gashes that would likely be forever embedded into her skin. She followed after Mesa, wincing with nearly every step- it felt as though moving only made the gashes 3 times larger. She quickly pushed it to the back of her mind though and glanced back for a last look at the bobcat.
When she and Mesa were once again in sight of the herd, they watched the two approach, stunned, like they were some sort of extra-terrestrials. Tango did a half-smile and stuck close to Mesa's side, head-up as they approached. She was quite tired, but she wouldn't show it. Horses swarmed around the two, including Tango's mother. She looked infuriated. Whoops. She looked at Mesa, and he looked somewhat amused, somewhat proud, and somewhat... anywhere but here. She followed his glance to the edge of the herd and retreated her look when he focused back on the surrounding, questioning horses. Tango would let someone else do the talking, she had business to attend to. She wandered over to the other yearlings.

Rubi
Rubi set out through the desert, watching the looming mountains get closer, until finally she reached her destination: a clear spring that flowed out of the mountains and into the edge of the desert before disappearing underground, in much the same way living things escaped the heat. Rubi wondered whether it kept going, through a muddy tunnel, or if it soaked into the parched earth until it ran into a trickle. She pawed at it a bit, trying to see, but eventually tired of that and splashed through the spring, feeling the soft, cool mud under her hooves, and then stood in the middle with the water flowing over her dusty legs and took a long drink of the fresh water. It probably wasn't as cold and clean as it was in the mountains, having flowed through dust and dirt in the heat of the desert, but it was enough to cool her down some, and with a longing glance at the mountain peaks- so much unexplored terrain, but fully off limits- she turned her attention back to her drink. Once she'd drunk her fill, she ate the bits of wonderfully green grass growing on the banks. She wished the herd could move here for a while, but what little grass grew near the spring wasn't enough for them all, and it was dangerously close to the Alpine territory.
Feeling as lively as a spring filly from the meal, she splashed about a little longer, enjoying the drops of water splattering her sides, then left the water and galloped off, not bothering to shake out her damp coat. The heat would dry it in no time at all.

Mesa
He smiled privately when he saw Tango run off to the other foals, heedless of her injuries. He hoped she'd at least wash the blood off in a mountain spring before her mother had a heart attack- which reminded him, he'd better calm her down. The herd parted respectfully for him, and he went over to the mare, whose eyes were wide with worry and amazement. He did his best to explain how brave her daughter had been, trying to downplay the fact that she'd snuck off- how many times had he done that as a colt?- and that she'd almost gotten herself killed. Doubtless, the filly would be in big trouble anyway, but at least he'd tried.

(((Sorry this isn't a story post, but I gotta know: Is Windigo like up against Calypso's shoulder or is she in a spot where Calypso wouldn't notice her right away? Like parallel to her shoulder but a bit farther back.))) Nevermind lol

Calypso came to a slow as the bird flew out of her reach. A bit saddened but still excited by this new place. She wasn't on high alert like she usually was, as even thought this was a new place the excitement outweighed any fear she might have. She noticed something ahead of her, it was green and spiky. Is that what a cactus looks like up close? She had never seen one closer than about 40 ft. before. She went up to it like an over excited foal and bumped it with her nose, not really thinking that would be a bad idea. Unfortunately, it was. She slightly reared up in surprise Did a plant just hurt me? What is wrong with this place? At this point, she realized she could hear the amused snort of another horse. Startled, she whipped around, just to be face to face with a tall mustang mare. Calypso took a mental note not to mess with her because she looked quite strong.

(Whoops, should’ve made that a bit more clear- my bad!)

Windigo
Windigo snorted, slightly amused. She’d watched countless foals do that before, but she’d always kept her amusement to herself when they touched them as not to further upset them.
“Buisness?” Windigo demanded, asking what and why the horse was here. She didn’t wait for an answer though- she already knew this horse had just wandered into the territory. Mostly only because of the way she’d approached the cactus, but also because this wasn’t a horse any leader would send to deliver a message. Too curious to be a messenger horse. Windigo knew the lead stallion would want to meet this horse, but she also knew deep down this horse would be berated if Windigo made her come. If the lead stallion found out she’d let a trespassing horse go- she’d be in for it. But- if she brought the horse back who knows what would happen to her.

A light bulb chucked itself into Windigos head, almost knocking her out.

“Come with me,” Windigo said, praising herself for such a wonderful idea. She started toward the herd, knowing the horse would follow, but preparing herself in case she didn’t.

Tango
Tango approached the other foals, and got in a few minutes of story time before she heard just about the angriest snort behind her. She swallowed, and turned slowly to face her mother. “Oops,” was all she’d managed to get in before her mother drug her away from the other foals using only her words. Tango’s mother was good with her words- which she hated. Her mother was one of the only horses she couldn’t fool. Luckily though, Tangos mother never raised her voice- not to her surprise though, she’s never heard her mother yell or shout. While her mother talked to her and tried explaining she wouldn’t be allowed out of sight for awhile, Tango watched the sky. How beautiful it was, and it was always there. Always there for her, it would never leave. The sky was one thing she could count on to always come back for her, and so she was happy for that. The dried blood started to irritate her skin, and she decided it would be a good time to apologize to her mother and make a run for it. She stammered out a half-real apology to her mother and quickly left to find a spring. When she finally reached it she trampled right into it, rolling and such. She enjoyed the cool water and stayed in the spring for a while.

It's ok, it happens lol))))

Not even giving her the chance to speak, the mare beckoned her to come with, Calypso got more than a little nervous. She involuntarily shivered I'm so screwed. She's gonna tell her lead stallion. What am I gonna do? They're gonna send me home.. Maybe I'll be banished? She was about to ask the mare what was happening, but she was already moving. After she thought about banishment, another thought came to mind. If I'm banished I can go wherever I want.. The mare wasn't waiting for her and kept trotting on. Calypso pawed the ground in irritation, still standing still, trying to think of what she was gonna do. Just go for it, she told herself, and began go after the mare. Much slower and farther back, mind you. This is either going to be the worst thing ever or the best.

Windigo

When the horses finally settled into an even pace, Windigo called back, “Name?” She was too busy thinking up a storm to use more words than necessary. She waited for a response, but continued to keep her eyes locked on the herd that was now coming into sight. They would be nervous and flighty when they saw an extra horse coming in, and so Windigo needed to think quickly. This has better work, she told herself.

“Oh, and whatever I say- go with it. Got it?” It was less of a request and more of a demand, but Windigo didn’t care, she was busy. “And- *Windigo spun around abruptly* I don’t know what’s going to happen to you, but if you don’t want it to be something bad, let me do the talking. Don’t do anything stupid.” She turned back toward the herd and continued toward the group of now-anxious horses.

Rubi
Rubi, slowing down to catch her breath, glanced back at the mountains, where the origin of the same spring she'd just been drinking from was visible, a thin blue thread snaking through the rocky terrain. Then she skidded to a halt, turning around and peering closer at it. There was a thin equine figure, off in the mountains, visible at the spring. Rubi stomped a hoof, angry at the mere sight. Obviously, it was one of those Alpine tramps, making her mad even though they were in their own territory. Cantering back, almost to the edge of the Talula ground, she could make out the distant figure, rolling around in the spring, more clearly. It was small, maybe a foal, and black or brown. She suddenly realized that the horse was pretty badly slashed up, awfully bloody, which no doubt explained what it was doing in the water. Maybe a dispute with the Spruce herd?
Ruby felt sorry for them, in spite of herself. They're just a foal... She shook out her mane, upset with herself. They were an enemy foal, and no matter how injured or young, she hated them. She turned and rushed back, in the direction of the herd.

Mesa
Wisely steering away from Tango and her mother, who seemed to be even more upset than he'd predicted, Mesa trotted back to the center of the herd, where the horses, far from calming down now that the mountain lion was dead, instead acted more upset than ever.
"In my day, we didn't go around attacking mountain lions in the dark!" muttered one grey old horse.
"The amount of predators in these mountains rises every year!" insisted one particularly agitated mare. "We'll all be killed before we have a chance to starve to death, mark my words!"
Mesa snorted softly. He'd long gotten used to the fearful, not-too-smart ways of the herd, and missed the days when the herd acted as one, willing to risk their lives for the greater good, moving on when need be, without such needless debate. They'd stayed in this spot for a few months now, never straying far, and they'd grazed down every last blade that grew in the area... but now he was reminiscing like an old stallion, wishing things could go back to the good old days. He made his way to the lead stallion, conversing in quiet tones. "We really should move on. The predators are starting to figure out where to go whenever they need a tasty foal, and we don't have enough strength to defend against them anymore."

Adding a new character c:
Iris
Tall eight-year old mare with a glossy bay coat and wavy black mane and tail. One white marking on her front leg, and a white marking mostly on the right half of her face. Her right eye ranges from light, almost frosty blue to deep lake blue, and the other is brown. She has two foals, one a four-year-old mare (Juniper) and the other a yearling colt (Aster). She's a friendly horse, and popular in the herd, but quite ruthless against members of the enemy herds and anyone who breaks rules. She aspires to the role of lead mare, being in a good position for it as niece of the current one, and isn't afraid to use her influence from this role to bring about whatever changes she wants. She is very tactful and clever. Despite her hunger for power and somewhat selfish ways, she is a good mother and a caring friend to a select few, though she knows how to cut her losses at a certain point.

Iris grazed innocently, though really she was keeping an eye on the horses around her. One stallion had been rumored as having a friend among the Alpine horses, and though it was rare for anything to come out of such rumors, it was good to watch out for traitors. Energized as always, Aster jumped around near her, grabbing a few bites of grass now and then. Iris snorted. That colt was the craziest yearling in the world, that was certain.
In the distance, she could see the lead stallion and mare, grazing together beneath the trees. She tried to appraise them without emotion, though she felt some annoyance flare up at the sight of another mare where she was certain she belonged. But not forever, she consoled herself. The lead mare, Sage, was getting old, and the herd was getting tired of her and her poor judgement. Eventually, she would die, retire, or be forced out of her role, and Iris, as her niece and a favorite of the herd, would most certainly be accepted as new lead mare. Iris flicked her ears in pleasure. Soon, that would be her, standing as head of the Spruce herd, beneath the trees.

Tango
When Tango was done splashing around in the water, she'd spotted a horse in the distance. Running... away... from her? She trotted out of the water curiously and watched as the horse galloped away. "Odd, I guess the stranger horses are not as friendly as mother chalked them up to be." Her mother had warned her about stray horses being overly-friendly, and beckoning you toward their herd. She'd said never to listen, and turn tail and run. Tango wanted to listen to her mother but, found that she would rather come up with her own answers. Pulsing through the ground broke Tango's thought train.
"A herd- on the move?" She thought to herself. "Why?"
Tango quickly retreated to the herd and wondered why most all of them gave her glances of disgust and anger when she'd returned. If she'd known about the herd moving, she'd probably had thought they were blaming it on her. She ignored the looks though and trotted up to Mesa- who appeared quite busy. "What's going on, why is everyone mad?"

The fellow roan asked for her name. "..Calypso.." she said quietly. Maybe a little too quiet, actually.

After basically being told off like a yearling, the older mare telling her to do what ever she says. Pushy much? Well, to be fair I'm in her territory.. Calypso sighed and didn't answer, but she knew she would listen. "And-" Suddenly the mare whipped around and was face to face with Calypso. A bit startled, she backed up a few paces. “I don’t know what’s going to happen to you, but if you don’t want it to be something bad, let me do the talking. Don’t do anything stupid.” Calypso pinned her ears in irritation. Jeez, I got it.. She turned around and started trotting again. As they continued on, Calypso could see a good-sized herd of horses. She didn't expect the herd to be this big, the older stallions and mares in her herd always said they didn't have enough water in the desert to sustain too many horses.. Was that story even based on truth?

Windigo
She huffed as they approached the herd, and the lead stallion appeared as if on command. He was huge, he even towered over Windigo. His muscular build added to his height, and his deep-set eyes only made things worse. Windigo was not afraid of him though- she was only cautious of him if she had a reason to be. She guessed it would be different for the new horse though, who'd never seen him before. "Look what I picked up-" She didn't give time for the stallion to guess, "A horse from way East, on her own. She has no herd, and from what I've found no family either." The stallion shifted his weight, "And what do you suggest we do with her?" "Well," Windigo snorted, "We could use a deal-breaker. We all know that Spruce's leaders about to drop dead." Windigo turned, parallel with the stallion, and studied Calypso. "She could be useful."

Rubi
Finally getting within sight of her herd, Rubi slowed down, uncertain. Even from here, she could tell there was a tense mood here. Something was up.
Trotting cautiously into the midst of the herd, Rubi spotted the center of attention- the lead mare and stallion, speaking to each other about something. What was the problem? Then she spotted a vaguely familiar horse beside them, which after a moment she recognized as the mare from the desert. She flicked her ears, listening intently to the members of the herd talking to each other, as well as the leaders' discussion. She couldn't hear them well, but from the herd's muttering, she somewhat grasped what was going on. A lone horse? She'd heard of such horses, of course- outcasts from herds, horses lost during storms, wanderers left behind when the herd moved on- but everyone said that such horses never survived long. Without the protection of a herd, they would certainly starve or thirst to death, if they weren't killed by coyotes or the like. And the lead mare's plan- Rubi couldn't figure it out. Everyone was whispering things about the lead mare of the Spruce herd, but she didn't know what that would have to do with a lone horse from the east. Sure, it was common knowledge that the lead mare of that herd was aging, but you couldn't trust any news about the enemy herds, seeing as no one ever associated with them without facing banishment at best, and no one was foolish enough to venture into enemy territory in search of news. Puzzled, Rubi surged a little further into the midst of the crowd, straining to hear.

Mesa
He turned to the dark filly, a little irritated to be interrupted during a time like this- the lead stallion had guessed that moving on wouldn't go over well with the herd, correctly it seemed, and asked him to supervise the move to prevent his own falling out of favor- but relieved to see that with the blood washed off, Tango's injuries looked much better. He'd been a little worried, but she would be just fine. "We're moving on a little. This area doesn't have nearly enough to eat for the herd, and the predators are figuring out where we are. Most of the herd has been unhappy with this place's problems for a while now, but they still aren't very happy to be moving on, either. They like the location itself, and it's dangerous to be moving with so many predators in the area, and when we're so weak." He shook his head. "And I'm afraid a lot of them are unhappy with you, for sneaking away by yourself. They're blaming the decision to move on you, though it's really about the reasons I said. Too many predators, not enough food." Mesa started to turn away, and then looked back. "And, Tango... try to stay close to the herd. It will be dangerous, moving through unfamiliar territory, and there are sure to be lots of predators and rockslides- not to mention how upset your poor mother will be if you aren't careful." He smiled a little at the thought of Tango's mother, the most excitable horse in the herd.

EDIT: Just realized that today we've been roleplaying for one month! YAY for active roleplays!

Windigo
Windigo talked quietly with the lead stallion, but the other horses only inched closer, hoping to hear what they were discussing.
"Fine." After much convincing, Windigo had proved how Calypso would be useful. She smiled at herself contently and turned to the gathering bunch of horses.
"Everyone, this is Calypso. She is not from around here, knows nothing of the herd, or herds, for that matter. Welcome her with respect, she will be sticking around for a while."
Windigo twisted back around to speak with Calypso. She walked away, asked Calypso to follow so they could talk alone.
"I'm going to assume, since you ventured into our land, that you weren't in the group that much. What will Sage do if she realizes you are missing? Will she even realize? The longer it takes her the better. Oh- and, no speaking of the Spruce herd around my horses. None at all. Got it? If I find out you say anything to any horse you'll be in more trouble than you know." Windigo turned to face the mare. She studied the horse yet again for a long while.
"Tonight, I want to talk with you more. I want you to tell me everything you know." Windigo muttered a few more words, under her breath. "About Sage," Windigo desperately wanted to know who was likely to become lead mare when the other horse dropped dead. She had her ideas, but thanks to not having any access to the herd's information for quite some time she wasn't for sure. "For now, go with Rubi, ask her to take you to a spring. Get wet, then roll around in the dust. Right now, you look nothing like a desert horse. Don't try to get away, you'll die of thirst before you make it to any of this herd's borders."

Tango
Tango was a bit taken aback by how the horses thought it was her fault. Heck, if anything she'd thought they'd be happy for her. She had just saved them from a bobcat- not that they seemed to care. She flattened her ears against her head partly in anger. She was so angry she'd almost missed where Mesa had told her to stay near the herd. "Yeah... yeah, will do." She realized it wasn't worth taking it to heart though, and she trotted over to the other yearlings, ah, story-time- yet again. Tango started her story back from the beginning and the other yearlings flicked their ears around in wonder about what she was saying. She was just getting to the good part too when the lead stallion had asked everyone's attention. She turned to face the stallion, as did everyone else. His eyes were on her. She flicked her tail when he finally looked away- and he began to speak.

Calypso was listening intently to the conversation between the lead mare and stallion, and it sounded like they where going to use her to get back at Spruce Herd, or more specifically, Sage. Calypso wanted to say something, but felt that if she said one word she was done for. I'm not usually this nervous about anything.. Well then again I don't do much.

The roan mare turned to her and began to speak, "I'm going to assume, since you ventured into our land, that you weren't in the group that much. What will Sage do if she realizes you are missing? Will she even realize?"

"I don't think she'd realize for a long time, honestly.." She muttered under her breath.

"The longer it takes her the better. Oh- and, no speaking of the Spruce herd around my horses. None at all. Got it? If I find out you say anything to any horse you'll be in more trouble than you know."

"About Sage,"

Calypso gave a curt nod, funnily enough, she respected this horse. It just seemed right. Though, she still was a bit scared. The mare studied her for a little longer, making the situation a bit uncomfortable for the latter. Just when she thought she was going to let her go.. well she didn't know but something, she spoke again.

"For now, go with Rubi, ask her to take you to a spring. Get wet, then roll around in the dust. Right now, you look nothing like a desert horse. Don't try to get away, you'll die of thirst before you make it to any of this herd's borders."

"..Right.."

She turned to see a filly, maybe a year or two younger than her, standing nearby. She must have heard the conversation. "Are you Rubi?" She asked her.

(Lol- that picture is great :3 )

Windigo
Windigo watched as Calypso walked away. Smart horse. Though Windigo didn't act it, she had actually taken a liking to Calypso. If Windigo wasn't stern with the horse, she would think her herd was weak- it wasn't, and she wasn't about to take any chances on that getting to any other herds. Calypso seemed to be a calm horse, who listened to what she was told. With the right training, she would be perfect for what Windigo was looking. A calm-mannered horse that could easily sneak away. Windigo thought about what she'd do with her for a while. Introduce her to the herd, get her settled. And... wait. Windigo trotted back to the herd to address some of the confused horses.

(I love that picture so much though)

Rubi
Rubi was so surprised to have the new horse- Calypso, her name was- talking to her, it took her a moment to respond. She bobbed her head a little "That's me." She wondered what the mare wanted, and what Windigo had been talking to her about. She doubted the lead mare had taken her into the herd out of the goodness of her heart.

Mesa
Mesa frowned as he watched Tango walk away, wondering if he should have stayed quiet about the herd being upset with her. She didn't seem very happy, but he didn't like getting into the practice of lying to foals.
His attention was drawn away by the lead stallion calling everyone to attention.
"As Mesa has informed you, he has advised that we should move on." The lead stallion, whose name was Shale, was excellent at deflecting the blame if the herd disliked his decisions. "Like you, I shall miss our old home, but with a dangerous cougar endangering one of our young foals, the problem has come to a head. We will make our home in a place full of grass and fresh springs, away from the dangerous enemy territory, with no cougar or bobcat dens. We will find a safer place to live!" The herd neighed approval. "We should reach a suitable location in a few hours. Stick together, everyone. Safety in numbers! We will not feed any cougars tonight."
Mesa shook his head. Shale always promised these things. Last time, it had been, 'We will find a place closer to the enemy territory, so that we can watch out for them. They will not get anything past us!'. Now, they were moving away. It didn't matter. Not that he could do much better- if you were honest, then the herd hated you and challenged all your decisions. If you weren't, you might manage to stay on top for a little longer, but a corrupt leader could only last so long before he led his herd into destruction.
Shale eventually stopped talking, and the herd moved out of their home.

Iris
Having eaten her fill of grass, and done all the spying she could, Iris moved to the pond, where most of the herd was gathered, drinking or talking. Foals played in the water, splashing almost loud enough to cover the sound of their gossiping mothers' voices. Iris suppressed a smile. Mares loved to talk. She went over to a spot where she could be just out of the center of attention, simply because she enjoyed watching mares pretend not to hurry over from the center of attention to speak with her. Most of them considered themselves her friends. None of them were.
"Oh, Iris, nice to see you!" a dapple grey chirped.
Iris smiled as if they were a long-lost friend she hadn't seen in years. "How's Meadow?"
"Oh, she's a handful," the grey admitted. "Always getting into trouble."
"Naturally, but she is the sweetest filly." Iris wished she could be with her foal, or really doing anything but having this stupid conversation, but she needed to keep everyone's support. She had everything in order, now it was just a waiting game, a matter of keeping everything in order until Sage was ousted and her chance came.
