Traditional Art!

#19279 Posted on 2016-03-14 17:24:52

Hello! I enjoy doing computer horsey arts, but I do not have a graphic tablet (yet?). I have been drawing horses for as long as I can remember. Here are a few doodles I'd like your thoughts on. Before I show them to you, though, I have a few rules to go over.

Rules
~ DO NOT STEAL. This is a no-brainer. If you do steal, you will be blackmailed.
~ I may sell these doodles. If I do, credit me on the image.
~ Constructive critique only. Do not say "this and this looks off" and then not give tips on how to improve on that point. "This looks off, but you can make it better by ____."

Now, for the art!

What Sugar?

Head Portrait

Wind Blown

There you go! ♥

P.S. My apologies for erase markings. I do not have a super amazing eraser (like my art class does xD o.o).

I did? What about it seems off to you?

The What Sugar one is a cartoon-y one, so that one is not supposed to be extremely realistic. ;D

I would practise some more with proportions, But think it is nice you're trying. :)

If the other two you posted aren't meant to be cartoony, then pay attention to the realistic proportions of horses. Horse legs are not just long squares, hoofs not eather. Basicly all the body parts look like squares to me honestly. Horses contain lots of curves, bows and corners. I would suggest using references, and réally use them. Eventually draw them over.

Just keep on trying and trying, it does really take time to learn properly drawing. Don't think too easy. :)

Okay, thanks. I try doing hooves and need a bit more practice with those. If I try to make them too realistic I flunk. xD

These all are more cartoon/realistic mixes of sorts. I still need some practice. I've just picked it up again after a bit of not doing traditional horses.

Even if you're going for a cartoony style, your horses will look more alive if you add more detail and definition to them. The eyes could also use more fleshing out - look for photos of a close-up horse's eye and practice drawing it. Study the shape of the eye, including the pupil, and don't forget to add a shine to the eye. That helps it look alive.

Okay Oswin, I respect that you've just started again and I hope you're having fun & get inspiration during drawing. Because if you draw enough with references you'll get better at a given moment. :)

But do take your time and don't think too easy about it! Look closely at the proportions of your references.

Really good start! :D I quickly sketched these on my phone and right if I showed it to you it might be useful to you on horse skeletons. At least how it had helped me.

First I draw the skeleton, which is just shapes.

Second I draw the lines of my horse.

Then I just erase the skeleton and add hair or whatever lol.

Hope this is helpful! Keep up the good work, just takes practice.

Tbh, I think that you're going in the right direction for realistic/cartooney mixes. I draw in a similar style, but it's more manga (because it is...). Watching my friend draw feet is what really helped me, an my faces just took on their own turn until I got them just right. But I'm not really trying to get any "better" in means of realism, which is what most people think of as better in general. I just need to add more definition and aliveness, which is something I think you need to practice on as well. But, with a little proportion work beforehand, I don't thing you'll find that hard! :)
Just remember: horse heads from the front view aren't circles with a half-oval sticking from the bottom; they are that way in a first sketch, but should be smoothed out into a curving shape. Hope I helped! Feels good to be able to help someone in an area where I feel actually comfortable in my own abilities! Keep up the good work ♥.

Yeah, the shapes I use are specifically what the animators use for spirit in "Spirit Stallion of the Cimarron"
