Starting a 'line'

#56016 Posted on 2016-07-25 06:18:33

I was thinking of coming back to the game and breeding some horses (showing as well, duh.) and see how the line goes.

How much money should I save up before I start buying horses, training etc.?

I'd say it really depends on how many and how will the horses be, a very high statted horse can and will go beyond 10.000 for sure, luckily you'll find +500 statted horses for 5.000, but it's kinda rare, from my point of view. But as a minimum, i'd say you should keep around 15.000 if you're not worrying about horse stats, but maybe 25.000 if you do. As far as i have seen, entering 10 horses into shows can cost you a lot. Even entering all of them into shows that cost 20$ can cost you a lot.
Entering 10 horses in 10 shows that cost 20$, 2000$... A day.
But don't worry! you can also visit the games tent or the fountain, or the junkyard, if you feel like your economy is not going well. You might get a lot of money from these places!

Hmm, if you wanted to start your own foundation line...

It would be wise to start with foals, which are 2,000 EVD each. Personally, I create anywhere between 10-15 pairs (1 mare and 1 stallion) each time I add on to a line, which already puts you at a minimum of 20,000. Say you buy enough food for two weeks at the start, the minimum amount of feed mix you can buy is 100 uses for 100 EVD. Then, if you decide to treat, you'll need to buy at least 4 stacks of either apples, carrots, etc. which comes to 800 EVD right there. That puts you at 20,900 EVD already. Because your horses will be foals (if you choose this route), you wouldn't need to worry about showing and training for another 3 weeks. However, you'll need to buy at least another weeks worth of food before you can show (my previous calculations was just enough for a little over two weeks). That's an additional 400 EVD to get you to three weeks. 21,300 total so far. By the time you begin showing, it'll cost you a minimum of 20 EVD per show, per horse. At the MINIMUM, that would come up to 2,000-3,000 EVD per day if you had 10-15 horses. After a week, that puts you at 14,000-30,000 EVD a week AT MINIMUM. For training, it'll usually cost you 20 EVD per horse, per day. That's another 2-300 EVD per day. After a week, that totals up to 14-21,000 EVD. Not to mention tack. It would cost you 550 EVD to buy a bridle, saddle, splint boots, and a tail guard from the general store. 550 x 10 = 5,500 EVD for 10 horses. 550 x 15 = 8,250 EVD for 15 horses (not to mention upgrading tack, which is BEYOND expensive in my opinion). Board fees, range anywhere from 10-100 EVD per horse, per week. For one week (I don't board foals unless they're at my home stable), it would cost you anywhere from 1000-1,500 EVD a week.

So, here's my equation for three weeks max for 10-15 horses. Someone please feel free to correct me if I made a mistake anywhere.

You could start your horses in Riding Schools rather than in Shows which would make you money rather than costing you money. Riding Schools bring in 300+ EVD per horse, so for 10 horses you'd make well over 20k per week.

I start my lines with anything that can get me down to just one foal (2, 4, 8, 16, 32 and once by accident 64) and generally start up a second line soon thereafter of the same amount as the first to get me a foal out of the two. While foals are what I start with, if you're new/low on funds, I would start with 3 year olds as they can start earning you money right off. They may miss out on a few stats but at least you won't have to worry about where you are getting money to feed them to much.

As aglet said, starting them in the riding schools might be a good idea as it does cost money to enter shows but not that and you are sure to earn money and stats where entering shows might not get you anything. Also be sure to train them, for while it does cost something every 10 days you get bonus stats which if you do enter shows it will be useful for them and if you plan to offer public breeding/studs it will make them more eye catching for some members :)

Edit: might want to check the rescue center for horses that will work for you before making a bunch :) cheaper that way.

Riding schools do not always give stats. They do, however, always make money, unless you enter your horses in your own school. And you will usually get some stats, just not every time.

Riding schools are a good option when you are starting out and low on cash, but it will not improve your stats as quickly as a carefully shown horse.
