ts the year 1865. You ride into town dead broke and looking for work. After tying your horse to the hitching post outside the store, you enter, only for a flyer on the notice board to catch your eye. "Lightning Bar ranch hiring hands. Must be able to fight. Cowards need not apply." Is what the scrawled writing says. "Good outfit, but that new ranch, Bar 7, is trying to get rid of them by any means. Red Tanner, the Lightning Bar's owner, hired a new foreman though that might just win this for him. It's a gal, but real tall, real scarred, and real hard looking. She's been up the creek and over the mountain, I'd wager. You'd better not apply if you're scared of dying though. The Bar 7's holding the high hand. They've hired 25 outlaws, all bad, bad men." Is what the friendly clerk behind the counter volunteers. Outside, the dust swirls slightly in the wind.. the same wind that's swaying the flowers growing on the fresh dug graves...

The sun was setting, throwing the Lightning Bar's buildings dark wood exteriors into a golden colour, the horses and cattle grazing on the lush grasses becoming only dark silhouttes against gold as the deal was finished, and the rough hands of Red Tanner met the equally rough and scarred hands of his new foreman. Outlaw McCarty rose from the table, tucking the signed paper clarifying she was now foreman on the Lightning Bar into her shirt pocket. After replacing her black hat on her head, she fixed her ice blue eyes on her new boss. "I'll be riding out tonight to check the herds, and be neighbourly like to the Bar 7 when they come calling. Edelweiss is staying here. Keep an eye on her will ya?" At his nod she strided swiftly out the door, and caught her big black mare from the corral where'd put her string of 6 horses and Edelweiss's mare. She threw a saddle on the 18hh mare and swiftly began cinching it as the first battalion of shadows began their march. There was a small pattering of feet, and a small hand slipped onto her arm. "I'm going to patrol tonight. You sleep nicely, and I'll be back morning." She gently told the young girl standing beside her. She gave Edelweiss a light hug, and watched her trot back into the house, then slung her rifle over her shoulder, slid the shotgun into the saddle scabbard, and swung up on the big horse, nudging her into a lope out of the yard, the twosome fading into the shadows as the last remaining rays of sunlight where smothered..

Outlaw
She rode into town 2 hours after dawn on her 16.2 hand blue roan mare. She was aware of the calculating looks from people going about their business, but paid no mind. With her hair behind her shirt, as she had it now, and her scarred, tanned looks she easily passed as a man, but it was the well worn guns in their holsters and her horse with its exotic bloodlines that attracted looks. She swung down at the saloon and entered, taking in each person in the saloon and pegging the trouble makers with a single, unnoticeable glance. She walked the bar, ordering a rye when the tired looking bartender made his way over. She sat drinking it slowly, simply listening, getting a peg on the feelings of the town folks and smaller ranchers. She noted a big man with a bold air studying her several times from the table shared with several other bad news men. That would be Frank Mander, Bar 7 foreman. She correctly pegged him. He got up and came striding forcefully over. She took an immediate dislike. "You the one shootin at us last night over on Lightning Bar range?" He barked at her. She simply sipped her drink for a minute, the man's face growing red at being ignored, and the watching crowd grinning behind their hats. "I was, and I was completely in the right as new Lightning Bar foreman" she replied. Before he could recover from his shock, she turned to face him, standing as she did so, and continued. "Furthermore, any Bar 7 hand seen on our range better light out in a hurry or have a mighty good excuse, or I'll hang him, drag him, or shoot him, his choice. Any Bar 7 cattle on our range will be pushed off, and if there is any sign of the being herded purposely over they will be consficated. Same goes for Bar 7 horses." He turned red with anger. "I will tell the sheriff of this, and get you thrown in jail!" He exclaimed. "I already explained my plan to him. He gave me written permission to do as I said. Now stay off our range!" She tossed down the rest of her drink, shoved money to the bartender, and walked out, leaving Mander staring after her, speechless with rage. She led her horse over to the store and entered it after tying her horse.

Johnny
Johnny wandered around looking for the Lightning Bar Ranch. The clerk had given him written directions, but he didn't really want to tell him he couldn't read anything other than 'yes', 'no', and 'hiring'. He came across what he could only assume must be the ranch and paused. It was much bigger and cleaner than he had expected. Doubt began clawing at the back of his mind. Suppose they don't like him? Why would they hire a dirty, thin guy like him who didn't even have shoes? He took a breath. He needed this money. His family needed this money. He was getting this money. He continued forward toward the building. "Howdy!" he called out.

Kitty
Kitty yawned as the first fingers of the dawn slowly grew to an almost unbearable brightness. It was getting closer to noon as her mare quietly ambled into town. She had ridden all night. As the blurred forms of people slowly began to become distinguishable from one another, she straightened up. She tucked loose strands of hair back into her braid, smoothed out the wrinkles in her clothes, and tried her best to look non-threatening. Since she was looking for work as a saloon girl, she wanted to make a good first impression on the people that she would most likely be seeing quite often. She gave her mare a pat on the neck and reassured her that a cozy stable and a belly full of grain were in her very near future. Seeing the saloon, she turned her horse towards it, hopping off and loosely wrapping the reins around the horse post. She paused for a moment outside the doors, taking a deep breath before heading in. When she walked in, she noticed that a lot of the ranchers seemed to have permanent scowls on their faces, and many of them were muttering something about "that new Lightning Bar foreman..." Not knowing what in the blazes was going on, she didn't pay it much mind, but instead heading to the bar where she asked for the manager.

Kitty
Not missing a beat, she responded, "I could do either, ma'am. Whatever job needs fillin', I can fill it." She paused for a moment, practically holding her breath in anticipation of the woman's reaction, afraid that maybe she was being too enthusiastic.

Sylvia
Sylvia narrowed her eyes and looked her up and down. She stood up and smoothed out her navy trimmed white dress. "Follow me," she said heading backstage. "I'm Sylvia, by the way."

Sylvia
"The man that runs this place is always out of town doing who knows what, so he usually leaves me in charge since I've worked here longest." She stopped at a pile of dresses and costumes and began digging through it. "We'll try you out on singing first.  Here, try this one on." She held out a light blue dress.

Kitty
She took a deep breath as she studied the dress Sylvia had offered her. It was definitely not the kind of garb she was used too; tight and very feminine. She mentally remembered her current attire; baggy leather pants and a loose shirt, both very dusty from travel. After this brief moment of hesitation, she gently took the offered dress to change into it, and proceeded to get lost in the folds of it. After struggling for a moment, she finally managed to get the darn thing on, though she could now barely breathe. Slightly embarrassed, she looked sheepishly at Sylvia. "How does it look?"

Sylvia
Sylvia adjusted Kitty's sleeves a bit and stood back. "Not bad..." She sat her down at an old vanity and picked up a hairbrush. "How often would you be able to work?" she asked beginning to touch up Kitty's hair.

Kitty
She winced a bit as the brush caught hold of some of the tougher tangles. "As often as you need me too. This is what I came here for," she said, smiling.

"Good. I'll be need more help around her pretty soon. Don't tell anyone, but I'm thinking of taking this job opportunity I read about the other day and I won't be able to work as often," Sylvia said twisting the front of her hair back and pinning it in place. "There. Do you have a song ready?"
