Long ago, a great ship had traveled for many months. It carried precious cargo, jewels and stones from faraway nations, and seeds of wondrous fruits and vegetables never before seen in the people's homeland. Perhaps they would be the answer to the long drought they had suffered for years now. The people cried out when they saw the shores of home, for so much time had passed since they had seen it they feared they might never gaze upon it again. But something was different. This was not the land of green rolling hills they remembered, where a dock waited to receive the ship, and people cheered upon seeing their loved ones again. This was a land of rocky cliffs, sharp spires of rock poking out from the depths to rupture the hull and sink the people into the waves.

And indeed, before the ship had even begun to approach the cliffs, one of the rocks scraped the ship, and foamy water burbled up into the ship before the crew scarcely knew what had happened. It swallowed the captain, the first mate, and all of their wife and children, and their screams echoed within their chambers. The ocean was hungry.

But the crew was not alone. The sea foam piled upon the rocks had heard the screams, and it could not let the ship perish. It gathered itself into a form, which knew itself as Caoilainn, and galloped atop the waves toward the ship.

The waves tried to stop her. But, as Caoilainn was made of the sea itself, they had no power over her. She was at the ship in an instant, standing upon the deck, letting out a whinnying scream that caused the waves to stop in their tracks. The sailors cheered. They were saved! They knew not who this creature was, only that she had led them to safety.

But the danger was not over yet. As soon as Caoilainn ceased her call, the waves began to pull together again. They were determined to pull down the ship once and for all. As they gathered higher and higher, higher than the ship itself, Caoilainn knew she had to act quickly. She had no experience, having just come to life, with which to concoct a plan. So she acted.

She threw away her horse form, dissolved into the sea, becoming the waves yet again. She was now part of the big wave, knew its heart and its mind, and shaped it. It carried the ship in its embrace, its height allowing it to place the ship directly on the biggest cliff. The waves let it down gently, so that the people on board would not be knocked around, and they began to cheer and cry once they were safe.

They looked for the horse who had saved them, but did not find her. Caoilainn tried to find the strength to pull herself into being again, but she could feel her strength and mind fading, becoming one with the sea once again. She fought and fought, determined to be. In her final moments, she breathed out a long sigh and let herself become nothingness.

The sea, however, was listening. It was unhappy with its child's tantrum, its hunger for the ship it had no need for. The sailors had done no wrong, and it was not their time to die. The waves should have known better, should have been better, and so the sea denied them the consciousness of Caoilainn, their consolation prize. She gave Caoilainn new strength, who reveled in it as she found herself again. The sea carried her to shore, where the captain and his family awaited her in awe, this horse emerging from the waves.

The sea left her with one warning: do not enter the waves again. She could not always protect her from her children, for she was mighty and had an endless task. Caoilainn was saddened, for she had emerged from the sea, and could not return except to die. She cast endless glances back at the sea as the sailors marched toward their homes.

In time, she found happiness. She had meadows to play in, and all the food she wanted. She became part of a herd of horses that all the sailors shared, and she gave birth to many foals. The sailors wondered why she refused to go even on the beach, but quickly learned never to take her to the ocean. Decades passed, and she was sad as she watched her children die, but they all lived full lives, returning to the sea when their time came to become one with it again. The sailors were kind to her, them and their sons and their sons. And though she longed to return to the sea itself, she was content with smelling the air and feeling the cool soft breeze on her muzzle. One day, she knew, it would be her time to return, and she would meld with the waves for the final time. They would have their prize in the end, but it would not matter to her. Not when she had lived so long and so well. Then she would be content to dissolve again into foam, her consciousness loosening its seams to let her seep into the sea.
