Question about breeding gray horses

#16378 Posted on 2016-03-07 13:10:06

Hi! I'm new to EV. I like it a lot so far, and I'm excited about seeing how the game develops.

I'm almost high enough level to breed horses, and I have two gray horses that I would like to breed (either with each other or with other horses) - however, I have so many gray horses already that I would like a non-gray (gg) foal from them. So my questions are as follows;

1: What are the odds of getting a non-gray (gg) foal by breeding a GG to a gg? Is it 50%? Or will the foal always be gray (GG or Gg)?
2: What are the odds of getting a gg foal by breeding a Gg to a gg?
3: What are the odds of getting a gg foal by breeding a GG to a Gg? Or can it only be GG or Gg?
4: I'm assuming breeding two GG horses to each other will always give a GG foal, is that correct?

I hope you understand my questions! Basically, I'd like to maximize my chances of getting a gg foal from my GG and Gg horses.

1) GG will always give gray
2) Gg will toss about 50% Gg depending on the other parents genetics.
3) GG x Gg will give Gg offspring
4) Yes, GG x GG will always give a GG offspring

While others dislike and frown upon gray horses in their stock....I personally breed specifically for gray. It allows me to worry far more on pedigrees, stats and conformation and not color genetics =)

1. GG will always pass on a grey allele, so GG + gg = Gg (grey).
---------G-----G
g-------Gg----Gg
g-------Gg----Gg

2. About a 50/50 shot. Gg (grey) or gg (non-grey).
---------G-----g
g-------Gg----gg
g-------Gg----gg

3. Again, GG will always pass on grey. GG + Gg = GG (grey) or Gg (grey).
---------G-----G
G-------GG----GG
g-------Gg----Gg

4. Yes, you can't get a g allele if neither parent has one.

With your Gray Gypsy Vanners you can only get GG horses. If you really want a non gray out of those, I would suggest breeding her to a gg stud, so the foal would Gg and then try getting a coloured foal out of that foal. So aim for 2nd gen non gray.
