Breeds Picked - Project Horse Breed Suggestions?

#98966 Posted on 2017-03-29 08:33:33

I've been breeding Clydes, GV, & Mustang since the first day I joined and while I do love them - I feel a bit stagnant. I'm think of getting a breeding pair to have a little side project. My problem though is that I'm not too familiar with any other breeds. I'd like a breed that doesn't specialize in driving or endurance (most of my horses are one of these specialties).

I would love to hear your breed suggestions! Could you please tell me what specialty the breed is best in also?

My picks are in my latest post below. I can't thank you all enough for your help.

Thanks so much!

I WOULD suggest Miniatures; but the most popular discipline for them is Driving. :3

Also, I have two nice Miniature foals for sale, and need to find them a good home; together preferably. One can be switched to a mare for a nice breeding pair. ;)

How about Trakehners? That's what I breed when they're not locked up :) Most I have seen are bred for show jumping or dressage (I breed show jumpers).

Are you sure we can't tempt you with more Driving ponies? Shetlands look great ;] ;] though secondary discipline for them is Racing, so cute xD

Dressage Trakes are where it's at, Show Jumping is for DWBs.

Or maybe Chincoteagues? I have western ones personally, and there was a good group of them in western, also Endurance though I think. But they've got a lot of color to play with!

Thanks for all the great suggestions! You've all given me a lot to think about.

@Feathered - I'm really trying to find a breed that's not primarily driving. Are Minis good in any other specialties?

@Cat & Lúcra - Trakes, huh? Dressing or Jumping would be a nice change of pace.

@PoniesStars - I'll ask you the same thing I asked Feathered - do you know if Minis are used for anything else as much as they are for driving? I'd consider them if they worked well in another discipline.

@Sabriel - I love my driving horses, but I'd just like a change for a bit. Racing Shetlands?! My mental picture of that is super adorable! DWBs do Show Jumping? Hmm... interesting. Chincoteagues in Western? I hadn't imagined that. Thank you for all the ideas!

@Happy Endings - What specialties are Andys good in?

I'm learning so much!

Lippizaner are nice and their most popular specialty is dressage. Plus I am trying to get more people to breed them.

I second Lippizaners!

We need more breeders!

Most people place their lippizaners in dressage.

Hmm... Another breed to consider. I'm so glad I asked about the different breeds here on EV! Thank you, Arbutus & Nienor!

Welsh Ponies or Trakes definitely have my vote....

I also think the chincoteagues are super cute!

I know what you mean! and a change can be good, and very refreshing. I can only imagine how cute it would look in real life. I know there's people with DWBs that do Dressage, and also some people that do Driving!
There's always the really popular breeds too, Paints and Quarter Horses in Western, TBs in Racing, and Arabs in either Endurance or Racing.
In any case, good luck finding something that interests you!

Tekes!!!
I'm doing a little "project" in my Biology class and it'll result in a few foals being born, which I don't need yet.

At the end they'll either be thrown into the rescue center or sold, and it'd be amazing to have someone set up to buy them already!

I'm so happy to have learned so much about different breeds here on EV! In fact, I'm so interested in trying new breeds that I've decided I'm going to raise 2 project pairs. I've already picked one of the breeds - Shetlands. I couldn't get the mental image of Shetlands racing out of my head. Then a found some videos of Shetlands racing online & that was it - I was hooked.

Super Cute Shetlands!

Now I just have to decide on the second breed.... I'm leaning toward Lippizzaners since both Arbutus & Nienor mentioned that they could benefit from new breeders. Although... I may only breed the one pair...

It's so tough to decide....
