EV genes in a nutshell (base coats)

#54492 Posted on 2016-07-19 16:43:20

It finally clicked for me...so I'm sharing my 2-minute-guide to understanding basic base coats in EV.

E is black
A is bay - but only shows on a black base
e is chestnut
At is brown - but only shows on a black base

Cr gene
E Cr = Smoky Black (dilute black)
E A Cr = Buckskin (dilute bay)
E At Cr = Seal Brown Cream (dilute brown)
ee Cr = Palomino (dilute chestnut)

CrCr genes
E CrCr = Smoky Cream (double dilute black)
E A CrCr = Perlino (double dilute bay)
E At CrCr = Moreno (double dilute brown)
ee CrCr = Cremello (double dilute chestnut)

*I listed single genes as kind of a "this is what is necessary" notation. E.g.: Black can be EE or Ee, but I simply listed an "E" since that is what is required to have a black base coat. I breed GVs and DWBs, so I am not familiar with Ch genes or perhaps certain others.
