Getting a new horse

#51679 Posted on 2016-07-08 04:27:41

Yep, that's right we're getting another horse. This time another full size riding horse. Rosie is in need of a companion, and we were going to get a Mini Mule. But, thought about it, and decided we'll get a riding horse instead. I've been needing a more experienced riding horse, as Mack is well very green. He can be ridden, but definitely isn't dressage or jump worthy.

We have two horses in mind right now.

First one is Diesel a Liver Chestnut Minimal Overo APHA Gelding. He's 9 years old, and 15.3 hh which is just perfect. He's been trained in Natural Horsemanship, which I wanted. He's been started over jumps, and already looks to be great at it. They provided a video. He stands perfectly still at the mounting block unlike Mack who moves all over the place. He's been to shows, and in parades. As well as passed mounted patrol tests, and been trail ridden. He's affordable as well Diesel

Anyways, what I generally look for in horses is experience, personality, little to no vices, and looks/conformation. I'm not picky about the breed, or color. But, I want a Gelding, as Rosie doesn't get along well with mares, and neither do I lol. Except for Rosie. I love them when I'm on the ground petting them, but not in the saddle most of the time. We're wanting 15.1-16.1 hh horses, as mom doesn't want a horse too short or too tall. He'll generally be my horse, but she'll get to ride him as well since Rosie is retired now. Mom is 5'0 so that's why size is an issue lol. Plus I have a fear of heights, even on tall horses. We're also looking for a horse that's 5-12 years old, as I want a life long partner.

I'm in no rush to get a horse, as I want to find my dream horse. So, far Diesel fits the description of my dream horse. Though, I'd be changing his name mattering on his personality.

Wish me luck!

They're both pretty. Having dealt with Andies before, they can be quite a handful, but the geldings can be very sweet (like any horse... really). Diesel is more around what you want, height-wise, and he's more likely to be a little more level-headed than Eclips because of his age. Other than that, without looking at any video, they both look good - though neither of them look like they've particularly been trained correctly to work over their backs. Easily done, though.

Yeah, I'm leaning more towards Diesel, because as you said better height. As well as more experience.

Plus Eclips may still grow bigger yet. Many horses tend to stop growing (height-wise) around 8 years. Diesel is likely maxed out.

Heads up! Be so, so careful when shopping around online. There are so many scam artists out there.

I've seen that Andalusian's pic advertised all over as various breeds, sometimes even as an Arab. Example1, Example2.

Notice that both of the above links list him as "unstarted" yet the photo shows a well-in-work dressage horse.

I think this is the real ad, as you can actually see multiple photos and more information. And he was sold awhile ago.

Good luck in your search!

-Edited to add: I kept thinking about this last night, so did a search for the paint and found a few different ads as well. I'm primarily a jumper, so I'm not sure the best places to look for western-centric mounts. I will say, though, that I'm very skeptical of ads when there aren't: 1. multiple photos (conformation & under saddle) 2. Photos that match description (western games? Then there should be a shot of that.) 3. A price that is really, shockingly good. (Yes, things happen...but no one sells a 20k horse for 2k.) 4. I "registered" horse not in the registry (seen this way too many times)

If you email and ask for more (current) photos, a copy of the registration papers, or a video and they hedge, beware. Trust your instincts. There are a lot of really nice horses and owners selling out there. But you don't have to look too far to find nasty people just trying to steal your hard-earned $$.

Eugh. After looking at that video, even if the Eclips you're looking at is the real one I'd go for the Paint.

The Paint has a video, we'll be calling today, to see if he's available. I've already decided not to go with Eclips.

We just bought a horse online in September, and he is just perfect. But, we're always careful. We always go look at the horses (except when we bought Shawn) before buying them. Plus get a vet visit done, to make sure they were truthful in saying the horse is healthy.

They say Diesel is registered, I'll be checking to see if that's true. But, he looks like a pretty good horse. We're looking for English horses, and that's what he is. Though, is a trail horse as well which is nice.

Though it is always disappointing when people lie.
