What do you do with your rescues?

#46904 Posted on 2016-06-13 18:23:53

I'm sure most of us keep rescues (if we keep any at all!) for riding school purposes, but do you have other plans for them? Do you show them ever? Any intention of breeding? How about treats?

I treat mine and send them to the riding school daily. I don't really treat with intention though, and give them whatever the horses in my paint project can't have (they're on peppermints until they turn 3, and then they go on a strict jumper's diet). I guess I use them as treat disposals...

Well
Some of my GVs and TWHs are Rescues, but they're foundations, so they're part of my breeding program

My second account is a rescue account. I adopt senior horses from the RC or other members and let them live out their days with me. I started it on the previous version of EV when there were a ton more senior horses in the RC. I treat, feed, and enter in riding schools, but my plans were always just to let them "retire" instead of being deleted.

I treat, train, and show mine! I do everything according to what their discipline is. If it isn't set yet, I will set it based on what their stats are. I figure that if I help them develop they have a better chance of being adopted/re-homed. With showing though, sometimes I'll only do 5/10 shows instead of 10/10. Occasionally I will apply tack as well, but that drives up the asking price so I don't always

I treat, train, and show mine. The older ones are in the Regional division, and show pretty well, actually. Rescues can do really well if you get them young and take good care of them.

Rescues are generally no different to my other horses, although I may modify my strategy based on their individual stats, age, colour, etc. I recently picked up a rescue with some great genes, although very ordinary stats as she'd pretty much never been trained, and she wasn't young either so not much potential to gain some. I wrote her stats off as mostly a loss, immediately bred her for her colour, and got a stunning colt with stats on a par to foundation horses, so I've added him to my foundation line. He'll be a great asset to that project, which has a high colour focus. The fact that his stats are nothing special isn't a problem. Just goes to show that even an untrained old rescue can still have potential. I plan to train her as best I can while she still has some years left in her, and perhaps get another breeding out of her later.

My rescued geldings and super-low confo horses are for the Riding School. Every single one of my Gypsy Vanners (minus the 5 or so that I've bought) are foundations picked from the RC for their confo and stat distribution, and they are treated and shown. Actually, my rescue foundations are kicking butt in shows. They're all paired up and will be breed when they retire. :)
