Eyeballs deep in ref sheets

#39427 Posted on 2016-05-19 14:24:53

After lurking in Eliza D's JM the other day I decided to try out Paint tool sai and I've been addicted ever since! I've spent the last three days making new reference sheets for all my characters! Sai is AMAZING for lines. I love it, like, a lot. I used to be so terrible at lines and cell shading and now I've kind of improved?? :D

In order that I completed them from oldest to newest:

Bron and Isobel's is my favorite so far!!

I still have like 6 characters left but I think I may make general lines 3 or so of my characters I don't use much. These are soo much work lol

Critique would be cool - I'm still learning as far as lines and ref sheets go. I've been working hard to give them "typey" shapes.

love them! your lines are perfect and the cell shading isn't overpowering for ref sheets which is good. i also need to make new ref sheets for my characters but i don't have the energy you do xD

i also love paint tool sai! it's the best! ♥

Those are lovely Sasan! I'm trash at lines regardless of the program I use, but yours turned out beautiful. c:

All of them are beautiful and the lines are really unique! I think I like Castor's the best.

Thanks guyss!! :)

River - Have you tried Sai? I used to think I was hopeless at lines but Sai has this amazing raster brush/pen tool hybrid which is kind of the best thing ever for lines. It took me a sec to get the hang of but now it makes it soo easy!

-squeals- They all look so awesome!I think you did an amazing job with their Type-y shapes! I can really tell the difference between the more Arab-y Castor, the Andyness of Sedir, and the warmbloodlyness of Enfys And Your drafty Lito is adorable. They're so cool!
The subtle shadings really make the horses pop without detracting from their beautiful designs or hiding colors.
Also can I just say the background images and different borders look REALLY NEAT.I love the pones you picked for each horse, they frame well nd match the designs too!

I too am very jealous of your lining skills though. I'm always too shakey on lines myself. SAI seems like a nice program, I need to get a new computer before I bother trying to download things, but I'm glad it's working for you. (And I so totally want lines/refs someday xD)

Cinch - After I get the 100 and 1 other stuff I already have on my list (including the Eventing series we discussed!) I've been toying with the idea of doing some refs for people cause it's a lot of fun!

Sabriel - Thanks so much!! Sai helps soo much with shaky lines! Not only does it have a brush stablizer which (as far as I can tell) causes the brush to ignore some of the hand tremors when you're drawing. Pretty amazing since my hands are super shaky!!
ALSO it has the hybrid pen/brush that allows you to smooth out lines after you drew them without redrawing. Saves soo much time. Also it lets you add more taper to the end of lines that you may have fumbled haha It's like permanent training wheels for making lines. xD

Edit: Sorry River I didn't even notice since I use that abbreviation all the time elsewhere! ^^;

As a mod it is my duty to remind you that profanity (even in abbreviation form) should be kept off of the non-18+ forums. It can be easy to slip, especially since it is often used so casually in conversation, but let's try to keep thing clean.

These are great, and the only one I have critique for is Seidr. However, it's some critique you should take with a grain of salt.

I find he melts into the background a little too much. It's difficult to see him and pull him apart from it. Dark on Dark = nightmare on the eyes.

THAT SAID, the reason you should take this with a grain of salt is that my monitor is VERY wonky and shows things too darkly, SO, What I say miiight be too dark, may actually be just fine and only my monitor screwing with me.

Buck - I had actually been wondering that about Seidr! Originally I set him up that way cause that's his character but for a ref sheet I think I'm going to play with the contrast :)

I would definitely do that too! I am glad it's not just me :D

(For any critique on color I offer in the future, if you ask, for future reference, take it with a grain of salt, considering my display XD)

He is an absolutely gorgeous character though!!

I'm always happy to hear critique even if you feel like it's just your monitor. That's still valid! A lot of people have monitors with off colors/contrast so other people are seeing it just as off as you are. :)

I finally got around to doing another handful of characters! I had kind of stopped because I wasn't a huge fan of how the lines turned out on Pol and Jadzia:

But I think it was just a slump because then I did Ziggy and Patootie's and got my groove back.

Patootie's is totally my new fav!!
