FAWN

I took Flashy New Year out of her stall into the main ring and started to work with her. She was eager to start, so I had lunge her around me for a bit to calm her down. When she was ready, I swung up into the saddle and started her at a trot. Flashy wanted to gallop, so I decided to work on control today. After 10 minutes, she got the idea and started to pay attention to my cues. I decided to end on a good note. I dismounted and started to walk to the barn when I saw a horse roaring down the track.

I leaned back slightly in the saddle and started to gently signal to Phantom through my seat to slow down, while also soothing her out loud with “easyyyy, easyyyy.” She slowed down gradually, until we where at a groundcovering, flashy trot. I let her trot for a lil bit, then signaled for a walk as we reached the exit. She obeyed, and I dismounted and led her off the track. She’d barely broke a sweat, and wasn’t breathing hard at all. I led her to her stall and untacked her, groomed her, made sure the stall door was secure, and then put my stuff away neatly. I then headed over to the stall where Hughes was, and studied him for a minute before even attempting to enter the stall. He was a dark dapple gray, with a slightly grumpy look, but under the grumpiness I could see he was one who wanted to please. I leaned on his stall door, gently murmuring to him until he came over and sniffed me curiously, then asked for pets, which I gave. “Think I could perhaps come into your stall, put on your tack, see what all you know?” I asked. I knew folks would probably think I was crazy for askin the horse, but I preferred horses to people anyways. People where too complicated. He backed away, making space for me to enter as if saying, alright. “Good boy” I muttered, quietly entering with his halter. He immediately came over and lowered his head to make it easier for me to put the halter on, which I did.

COLT

I was happy with how Fairy Dust did, so I started to walk her back into her stall when I ran into Fawn. We chit chatted with each other when Fawn mentioned the upcoming race. I looked on the calender and saw the race was next week. So much to do, so little time. I saw an carrot sticking out of Fawn's pocket, and asked about it. "I was going to give it to Flashy, but she doesn't seem to like carrots. You can have it if you want, but Flashy nibbled at it a little." My stomach grumbled and took the carrot and ate it, giving the top to Fairy . Fawn looked at me in disgust.

I calmly led Hughes out of the stall, with only his bridle his on, no saddle. I often liked to ride horses bareback some when training. He walked beside me quite happily as I led him past Colt and Fawn and out to one of the smaller pens.

After Colt walked off, eating a half droolled carrot, I put Flashy back into her stall. I gave her my back up treat, sugar cubes. She seemed to like them, so I made a mental note to myself. It was around 2:00 and I was done for now until I had to feed the horses. I went to a horse in the stall next to Flashy and stroked it. I remembered that Outlaw walked past me and Colt with Hughes so I decided to watch her train him. He was a pretty easy horse to train, but I still wanted to watch.

I started on groundwork, lunging Hughes and having him move on his front end then rear end. From my point of view, a racehorse who ran well and was easy to handle was the most valuable one on the track. I then desensitized him, having him step over a tarp, putting it over him, waving flags and other things. He was quite leery of the tarp at first then at my gentle but firm command stepped over. I finally led him to the middle and slid the reins over his head. I was using one of my hackamores on him, as I preferred to start horses without a bit. Don’t see why it’s so necessary anyhow. I neatly vaulted onto him bareback. He started at first, shying off to the side, but I neatly moved with him, and he soon calmed. I asked for a walk, which he willingly gave, and  after a couple minutes had worked up to a trot then a lope.
