my only concern however is that it'll become hard to tell, say, a darker shade of palomino apart from a flaxen chestnut if you don't look at the color mentioned on the horse's page

Well, in real life it's not always easy to tell such stuff without a genetic test or knowing the ancestors. Here we have the luxury of having it listed on horse page without the test.
Shades are tricky at that's what makes them more interesting. :)

Wow, I definitely support the idea and hope this would be added into the game. I didn't even know I needed this, but I for sure do! Your illustrations are wonderful as well!

100% support this idea. I believe it would be a great way to draw more attention to the currently less desirable colors and be one heck of an investment overall.

I LOVE THIS!!!!

Imagine the payoff! The variety without adding entirely new coats! :D

I really like this idea! It could add some rarity to our horses, maybe only a couple of horses get different shaded coats? idk

Seeing as we now have foal art on all our horses I have modified my Horse Shade Demo so that it also includes foals. It will now show all the shade possibilities for foal coats, as well as the corresponding adult coats. Let me know if you find any errors or other issues.

As an added bonus, no new art files will be needed to make this suggestion work for foal coats. As previously mentioned, it will still need a very small amount (9) of new adult coat images in order to work for all possible adult coat combinations.

Interactive Horse Shade Demo (now with foals!)

Am i weird, or does anyone else like to sit here and play with the shade demo? I LOVE it! This is a great idea, if i could support this as much as i wanted, this would already be in action XD You can do paint markings on horses that don't usually have paint markings! WOPPIE! I love this :D

^ Haha, yeah. It might give some weird results sometimes. :P My coding is quite rough, and doesn't include much in the way of error handling, so if the files exist it will try to combine them, regardless of whether it's a sensible combination. This means you will sometimes be able to see impossible colours like silver chestnut or flaxen black. With the foals you may also see colours that don't exist in that breed, because another breed that shares that foal image does have those colours. Just try to ignore the impossible options. They're not meant to be there. :P

@UlyssesBlue (spare) Re: "it just darkened the mane too much, even at low opacities." Did you try using a flaxen chestnut image? I feel like the white mane will work much better, if not, maybe you could erase the mane n' tail of the chestnut layer :) I'm going to do that and post the results :D
Edit: here it is :D Worked great!!
Here's 30% opacity with the Chestnut layer:
266x200

50% opacity:
267x200

And 70% opacity:
267x200

Here's the original Palomino for comparison:

266x200

Adding on to this, I would love to finally have Buttermilk Buckskins :D Right now, the closest thing we have is the buckskin roans, which aren't the greatest. So, here's a buckskin with white layered over it, the mane and tail need adjusting, however, as you have to remove them from the white layer.

Edit: nvm I'm too dumb to get it to work lol :p

Continuing on, I think lighter shades of bays going into copper and blood bays, here they are!! it's a bay with a chestnut coat layered over it, I had to erase the mane, tail, and legs of the chestnut layer so that the black would be visible.
30% Opacity:
200x150
50% Opacity:
200x150
70% Opacity:
199x150

And in case you were wondering, 100% Opacity:
200x150

On the bays I'm not really seeing a difference. They look the same to me :/

Yeah, I think I'll try again with a different breed because I think the coat of the chestnut and bay Tekes are too similar. Maybe it'll work with a Chincoteague or Shetland?
