[ADDED] Making pedigrees go back farther...

...to see great-great-great-great grandparents and such.
For people like me who track horses very far in their projects.
You could have the pedigree that we have now shown on their page, but maybe you could click a button to be able to see back even farther? Or something like that?
Sure, you could just go back to one of the oldest horses in the pedigree and look on from there, but I think it would be cool to be able to look at a horse's complete lineage.

I honestly don't see the point of making it go farther back...I would very much prefer to see more details on the existing pedigree instead. Making it go farther back would serve me no purpose, because there's a point at which I quit worrying about whether or not there are any related individuals way back when. The reason for this is the same as the reason I don't worry about it in real life...even in a diverse gene pool, genes mix, and making sure two horses being related as far back as through the great-great grandfather don't mix really isn't practical.

Not to mention, starting at square 1 with a foundie every time you get to that point really sets back both stats and confo, and therefore isn't very practical if you want to achieve consistency in your herd.

I'm not looking for practicality, nor consistency. Just to be able to see that far back... not for any specific reason.
But that's your opinion, and I won't try to change it.

I think you could have both. The close up pedigree as we already have with more detail and an extended ped with very basic detail. I have been on other games that do this.

Wouldn't that be data consuming for phones? I use my phone a lot so that extra loading stuff and more data per page might not be good. Please disregard this if it doesn't make sense. I am technologically ignorant :) It's just a thought though.

Having two pedigrees would be more stressful on the server rather than more data-hungry. For each horse in the pedigree it needs a query to the server.. I'd be okay expanding this by a generation, but no further than that really. One more generation is already 16 more queries, so it's getting a bit strenuous already :P

I quickly whipped up a different pedigree system (and picked a random unborn foal to test it on) - something like this?

Supporting. I'm crazy about keeping my pedigrees clean - or at least clean as possible - which is why I'm down to mostly third gens and under, until my own lines are started and solid. Since I really only specialize in two breeds, Paint and QH, I know by the name of most recent in their pedigree whether I want to buy them or not, but if I ever decide to expand into longer pedigrees or other breeds it'd be extremely helpful.

I think I would also change the links on the horse names to go directly to that horse's pedigree, rather than the horse itself. Might cut down some time spent going through pedigrees if you don't have to scroll through a dozen horse pages first.

What I mentioned would not be querying the server at the same time (ie not on the same page)... There would be the normal pedigree page as now and a link to extended pedigree which would open a new page and cancel/close the original queries.

^that's what I was thinking, too, Arty. Like it could always display the current one, but there could be an option to look back farther.

If we were to only add one more generation, I don't think it'd be worth it...

Yes, but the problem is that each generation I add doubles the amount of queries made.

With one extra generation (like in the screenshot above) that's 30 queries in total.

Adding one further generation adds 32 queries to the same page. If the argument is that not many people will use it, so the queries don't matter - then why am I adding it? :P

I am happy do add an extra generation to the main pedigree page to help make things a bit easier, but as a few of the others said (especially after +1 gen) it's only a few clicks onto the grandparents to see a bit further.

Edit - don't get me wrong, this is something that I would love to add if there was any other way of doing it, but the game is already slowing down so I need to investigate that, and adding tons more queries to a single page isn't going to help. I'm more than willing to add the extra generation to what we currently have though!
