**XRAY PICTURE** Bad Riding Accident

#22706 Posted on 2016-03-24 15:30:09

So last night I was riding my five year old gelding bareback with a friend. He can be a bit of a brat some times, he had the winter off and is just getting back into working. I decided that we would gallop a bit. We did this a few laps when he yanked his head down and threw me over his front end. I hit the dirt face first.

Now I wont be posting any pictures of my face, its fairly scrapped up and swollen and I look like I had a bad lip injection. Went to the hospital and thankfully there is no head injury. They didn't see anything wrong with my back so they sent me home with some medication and told me to take it easy.

Welp, this morning I get a call and they tell me I need to come back in for more tests, the saw something wrong with my xray. After going back in and getting a CAT scan it turns out I actually fractured two vertebrae. Thankfully they are stable and I wont need a brace or surgery. They bad part is I lost my job because I wont be able to work for 2-3 months. Now I need to find a way to make some income to pay my bills while still resting and healing.

Thank you. Thankfully they gave me meds to help with the pain. I'm just really stiff and sore today.

Jeez, you don't get medical leave? Rude...
I hope you feel better soon. That looks painful.

Ohhh that looks painful. And that really stinks about your job. I didn't think they could do that. :(

Ouchies! I feel your pain completely. Fractured my L1 vertebra in a horseback riding accident. I however did need a brace (like this). By the end of the three months I wanted to use it for target practice. Lol.

Biggest advice I can give you is take it easy and do as the doctor's say. Even then, you're still more than likely in for the chronic back pain I've noticed most people suffer from when they have a big back injury.

If you enjoy your job, or don't feel you can get employment elsewhere once healed, there should be laws in place that state that they must hold your job (or one similar) until you are able to go back to work. My sister had that happen, she was supposed to be back to work in October, and she's still been out of work to this very day (8 months total so far) and the company has had to keep a job for her (not like that's hard to do at Walmart... lol). But just something to look into.

Rest easy ♥

How many employees does your job have?
Are you technically considered disabled for your healing period?

If they employ at least 15 people and you are considered disabled while you heal up, then they are legally unable to fire you, as it would be a violation of the ADA, which is a federal law protecting all disabled persons (short term such as injuries or long term such as diseases and whatnot).

Wow. That's pretty ridiculous that they didn't see that IMMEDIATELY. The doctor who reviewed those rads in the emergency department should be freaking fired. Those are very obvious fractures.

As far as medical leave. In the state of PA the company has to have 50 employees for the FMLA to be used.

Yea, I work on a tiny breeding farm that only has eight employees. And I dont really blame them. Its their busy season and they need to fill my position. I'm just a little stressed about what Im going to do for funds until I can work again.

Ouch! Hoping for the quickest recovery possible!

I have worked for several horse farms, in a live-in position, so I can totally see a job like that firing someone for being unable to work, among many other reasons..many of them rather un-just.

I'm sorry to hear that though. :(

Was this also a live-in job? If so, will you have somewhere to go?

Thankfully this was not a live in job. I will never have my housing depend on my job. Also thankfully my landlords are very sweet so they are willing to work with me on rent.

This is not my first broken bone but by far the most irritating. I am so glad that I have so many supportive people around me. My boyfriend is almost beside himself worrying and doting on me and my mother and grandmother were almost on the next flight down here. (Im in Kentucky they are in Maine)

Well I hope to be there as soon as possible and will help any way I can. I am grateful that you're ok and that you didn't get another concussion.
