Any experience with cut tongues?

#17316 Posted on 2016-03-09 21:14:57

About a week ago, I noticed a giant laceration across my (real) horse's tongue, right where the bit lays! Last time I rode her was back in the beginning of Dec. so I'm sure it wasn't from a bit. My theory is that somehow she either bit her tongue or cribbed (she was trying to lip the bar next to her stall) on something sharp. Has anyone had this done to their horse, or has had any experience with it? We called the vet but he said he had a horse do this to itself but healed within a week.

She is eating well now, BTW.
Thanks!~~

It happened to my horse when I'd first gotten her. Still no idea what it was from, but the vet said at the time, if it doesn't look infected, don't worry about it, the mouth heals fairly fast.

I am not a vet or a vet tech, so, honestly, call your vet for advice.

The saliva should help keep infection out, shouldn't it? I'd just keep an eye on it, make sure it's healing ok and isn't getting really red, swollen, or infected looking. In the meantime I would not put a bit in her mouth.
