Just wondering how people feel about a non-genetic brindle being added to the game? i.e. it would be the chimeric type. I'm thinking the way it would work is horses would still breed as normal from a genetics perspective, but there'd just be a very small chance the foal could have a brindle coat, which would be reflected in the horse image and colour name, but not the genes, which would be inherited and passed on in the usual manner. Even though chimeras technically have two sets of genes, our chimeras would just have one, which we would interpret as being the genes present in their reproductive system.

It could maybe be a random 1 in 500 chance of brindle? More? Less? It could perhaps be completely random, or could have some complications attached to make it more realistic, such as there being more than one colour possibility in the foal (a chimeric brindle needs two obviously different colours to be present in the same individual in order to be visible).

We could perhaps expand the system to make it possible to get other types of chimeras, such as this.

Since it wouldn't be possible to breed for, this would be purely eye candy.

Thoughts?

I really like this idea! I love the chimera/brindle pattern, and I do think you pretty much covered everything XD

Seeing as I adore brindle, I support this!

I don't know how true or reputable it was and I can't remember where I read it but I'm pretty sure I once read about a singular line of horses that had a hereditary brindle Gene since every generation or every other generation had typical brindle patterns. I don't know if they found the Gene itself to test for it, but there is an argument for inheritable brindle.

Other than that, I'd support this even as a non inheritable pattern and would like to suggest the possibility of both dark and white brindling.

Disclaimer: slightly off topic post, as I'm not proposing adding Brindle1 to the game, but I just find this an interesting topic to discuss.

@Champagne
Yes, an inheritable form of brindle has been found, and a genetic test exists for it. It's known as Brindle 1. This is quite different to the chimeric form of brindle though, both in appearance, texture and other characteristics. It's classified as a disease as it causes a large number of health effects, so is probably not something we want to add to EV, even if Abbey was willing to add new genes, which I think she's said is probably not happening for a while at least. Incidentally, this is what horses with Brindle 1 can look like, although I understand there is a bit of variation:

This mare shows hair loss and lesions on some stripes, which is typical of Brindle 1 disease.

A & B are the summer and winter coats of the same Brindle 1 mare. The stripes have a different texture to the rest of the coat. C is a stallion which doesn't show stripes, but has very sparse tail hair. The gene is linked to the sex chromosomes, so there's a different effect in mares, than stallions.

Some examples of brindle1 with different colours. A: Brindle1 on a solid colour (probably bay or chestnut). B: Bay frame overo with Brindle1. Note the stripes even appear in the white patches. C & D: The same Brindle1 mare before and after a clip. Brindle and sooty are very subtle in the before pic (C), but much clearer after (D).

Sounds interesting.. I've never seen a horse with brindle irl. But sounds cool. What horse breeds is it going to appear in ev? And just out of curiosity what horse breeds tend to have brindles?

The horses that I have seen don't have brindles and I think that brindles show up in every breed of horses but I dunno almost anything about brindles. I would be happy to know more about brindles. :)

In theory chimerism can occur in anything, so I expect all breeds will get brindle if this goes ahead.
