Going crazy with lineage

#14688 Posted on 2016-03-03 23:38:44

Does anyone else go crazy plotting out their horse's lines and breeding potential? I went a little crazy with organizing. lol

I've been super excited about the recode because I used to breed Paso Finos but, like, almost no one bred them as well so I had a closed herd! Not great for breeding..

Since I changed them all into Gypsy Vanners and I'm actually going to be able to find outside studs I decided to take a super close look at my current horses and find all their lineages. And I found that my lines were just as dire as I predicted. xD Other than 4 starter horses I have about three horses who aren't directly related to each other. Out of those I only have two viable breeding pairs. What a mess...

I have sooo many other things I should have been doing. lol

I still need to do this for my shetlands, since I do not want to breed related horses to each other. I now have different lineages, and the horse have a stallion as appendix like SP/SL, great-grandfather is Silver Papillon and Sunlight. I also have some that have MD (Meadow as great-grandfather). But I always look at the mares too, since somehow some have the same mare in the lines (doesn't happen often, since I mostly breed those only once).

I have 7 shetland ponies with SP in their line, from which two also have SL in their line. Only one is MD, the others are all from outside.

I also have a closed herd, nobody is allowed breeding to my stallions, they are not available for stud.

Oh, I found out that Sunlight was sired by Alex and Stipke my very first two shetland ponies!

And I am combining two shetlands with great-great-great grandparents, such a big lineage that will be xD

@Megan - It's so useful but sooo time consuming!! I'm glad I don't have more horses cause even 15 horses took forever. It is REALLY nice to have the color-coded sheets right next to each other. When you're just trying to eyeball them on EV I realized I had a few (fairly minor) line breeding that I didn't realize. o_o I was so careful. Now I am prepared!!

@Arty - Yesss come to the Dark but Organized side!! :)

Done all my horses and most of them can't be bred with each other.
Gave the horses they had in common with each other a colour.

I have 21 shetland ponies lined up in pairs (one stallion gets 2 mares)

There's two new clean combinations, but one of them still has a similar daddy with another lineage.

almost all of mine are three or less generations, but I've got similar future spreadsheets for planned breedings. I love spreadsheets :D

Most of the herd I brought up couldn't breed with each other. So much fun finding horses of similar or better stats to breed to them.

Since shetlands have a smaller population than appaloosas, I don't envy your work.

Looks good! Its a good feeling to have a plan.

That's why most my herd is locked. I haven't had time to update and go over my excel sheet and pair everyone up.
