Breeding for Color

#97440 Posted on 2017-03-14 01:47:45

I breed QH's and am looking to add certain colored lines to my horses. Stats will be my main goal along with controlled breeding but I want a more diverse pool too. What genes should be bred to what for certain colors? I know Gg will grey out (I want to stay away from grey if I can) and Ff has a chance for flaxen. Feel free to look through my horses and give me color pair ideas. Any and all opinions are welcome, thanks.

I'm just starting with Quarter Horses and I was to breed a moreno(did I spell that right?) colored one with high endurance stats, I ended up with a black stallion, a smoky black tovero mare, a red dun roan sabino mare and a grullo stallion out of the Horse center

brown is a very sought after color in the quarter horses, as well as flaxen. a flaxen chestnut, red dun, palomino, or red roan would sell very well.

any modifier to brown or even the brown base is also considered rare and wanted, so if you're looking to get "rare" colors that really appeal to the market, go with brown bases and flaxen mods.

I am a quarter horse breeder. I breed for the silver gene, flaxen gene and brown based coats. Right now I am really trying to get another sable champagne or simular (sable champagne dun, sable cream champagne, etc) or moreno, and really any champagne color.

Something to remember is flaxen doesn't show on anything but red based coats, so it will show up on a chestnut or red dun, but it WONT show up on a black or bay coat, although if bred for flaxen on those coats, they will still have the genes.

Same goes for silver. Silver will show up on black, bay and brown based coats, but not red based.

I breed for these genes, in the order of most desirable first. Horses without any of these genetics rarley interst me, unless they have the stats and confo to make up for it.
AtAt,ff, Ata, AtA, fF, CrCr,ChCh,Chch, DD, Cr, D

I try to avoid all GG and WW in my private line, unless it covers the flaxen or brown genes.
I will only take a Gg, or W+ horse if it has the At gene, the f gene, the CrCr, or multiple genes on the list above.

If I take horses that are not of these standards, it's to use a coat randomizer on, and is usually to fill in gaps on my breeding plans.
