Found a Ff Foundation Mare

#97044 Posted on 2017-03-10 11:25:52

Hey so today I picked up a horse at the Rc ... a foundation mare. I got her genetically tested and she has recessive flaxen :) I'm just super excited that maybe they are putting the flaxen into foundy horses now. She is an Appy. Let me know if anyone else has gotten any from any breed? Here is her link if you want to see her...

I've gotten a few Ffs from either the EC, and one QH from the RC.
from the RC (used coat randomizer on, was black) Wrangler

I've also picked up a few other breeds to use as studs.(some from EC, I'll only show RC)
Cheezeballs

and for my paint line, these.
Gypsyflower

Crossroad, i think that might be a custom horse!
Abbey didn't put flaxen in EC horses until this year. With those leg markings, good confo, homozygous silver, and timing of creation, i think you lucked out and got a custom that someone dumped!

i've found two foundie heterozygous flaxens in the RC to date, and i look almost every day since the news that flaxen was in the gene pool :p

OMG that's awesome! Should start testing my foundies as well...
So far I've been mostly getting grays, and an occasional dun, sooty now and again.

Awesome!

Rising Dawn got a pangare vanner a week or so ago. I'm thrilled that flax is cropping up, even super rarely! :D

I do have a pangare foundie, bought it though, didn't get it from the EC myself.

Just checked, have 17 Ff's, but they're all lined ponies. And 2 ff's, but they're both black based, so you can't even see it :')

It's good to hear other people are having some luck too!
How exciting to be able to start a flaxen line :) Now all I need is a stallion lol.
If anyone has a foundation Appy Stallion they want to stud with ff or Ff, please message me?
I cant believe someone got rid of a custom! Crossroads that horse makes me want to start up a Chino herd :)
Silverwolves that is a great idea, to keep studs. I never would have thought of it. Wish I had the room to try it..

I got two Ff mares out of the EC today. Both vanners, and one is sadly under homozygous grey. But I'm very excited that this is now a viable way to keep the gene in a herd while bringing in new blood! (This was out of probably 30-40 horses, so it's clear that this is still a very rare gene.)

I'm curious, Silverwolves, that you have an Ff horse that you used a randomizer on! Was it Ff prior to using the randomizer as well, or only after? (I was under the impression that any flax was unavailable through the randomizer/applicator items, and that using one would 'erase' the flax from horse who had it. )
[Although, I suppose that makes some sense, if the applicators essentially "ignore" those genes as unavailable, that they would also "ignore" them when it comes to getting rid of them, kind of like a color item doesn't affect patterning genes...]

If it won't get rid of the gene, I might use one on that mare who has homozygous grey... but I'm afraid to try and lose the flax gene!

Might require some experimentation, if I can find any Ff horses I'm willing to take a chance with!

ETA: I took the plunge on using a randomizer on that Ff under grey foundation, and it did in fact leave the flax on her! :D
Her genotype prior to using the randomizer was EE AA GG Ff, and she's now a smoky black with Ff!

My suspicion is that it does just "ignore" the flax genes, because flax isn't available via the randomizer, so that gene set is simply unaffected. This means it might treat pangare, sooty, and silver the same way, as I believe they're all also modifiers that are not available on the applicators/randomizers.

I've also not tested this with an applicator, though I expect it would behave the same way as well.

I don't believe this is a bug, as it seems to be working as intended, if I'm correct that those genes are simply "invisible" to the items.

With the coat applicator/randomizers does it erase roan? Or just changes the color and not the roaning? Haven't used one yet. But I'm going to get one this month after I pay for the essentials...
