Hey everyone, I'm just wondering how easy it is to breed the "few spot" gene out of an appy line and what part in the genotype codes for it?

Also are spotted blankets rare or have I just not seen many?

Few Spots is the most common Equine Center marking applied to the store horses.

Few Spots is driven by two sets of genes, PATN1 and Lp. If the horse is LpLp, it will be a Few Spots so long as PATN1 is involved (LpLp PATN1patn1 or LpLpPATN1PATN1).

If you want to breed out few spots, breed LpLp horses to lplp horses, or PATN1PATN1 horses to lplp horses. You just have to eliminate the possibility of homozygous foals.

PATN1 will always override PATN2. If you want blanket or snowcap Appaloosas, you will have to breed out PATN1.

Snow cap is LpLp patn1patn1 PATN2PATN2 or LpLp patn1patn1 PATN2patn2. The double PATN2 results in a larger snow cap.

Blanket is Lplp patn1patn1 PATN2PATN2 or LpLp patn1 patn1 PATN2patn2. The double PATN2 results in a larger blanket.

Few Spot is LpLp PATN1PATN1 or LpLp PATN1patn1. It does not matter if you have any PATN2. The double PATN1 results in fewer spots.

Leopard is Lplp PATN1PATN1 or Lplp PATN1patnt1. It does not matter if you have any PATN2. The double PATN1 results in fewer spots.

Varnish Roan is LpLp (no PATN1 or PATN2) or Lplp (no PATN1 or PATN2.)

Having lplp results in no Appaloosa spotting or Varnish roan, regardless of what you have for PATN1 and PATN2.
