Cobalt lay in the comfort of the hot sun, just outside of the shade cast from the trees around the oasis. Already his coat was totally dry. The hot sand warmed his belly, and chased away any thoughts of water from his mind. No bugs buzzed in his ears. The quiet rustling of the tree branches in the breeze slowly lolled him to sleep. So tired was he that he didn't notice a horse approaching at first. He jerked his head up, startled, and got on his feet. Was this friend, or foe? The horse was a good size, maybe taller than he was. Curious, he stretched his noce out searching for a scent. The light breeze carried the approaching stallion's scent to his nose. Coby stiffened and arched his neck. He didn't have the strength to stand up to this stallion after his near drowning, but maybe he could pull a convincing bluff. As long as he know's who's boss I wouldn't mind having him around. Haven't seen a single horse since I was chased out. And in an unknown place like this, the more eyes looking out, the better. Cautiously he stepped out into the desert towards the newcomer, head high. Just hope this guy isn't going to be any trouble...

She made a slight hiss to the asp as he wrung around her neck too tightly, still parched from her travels. As she had headed along the desert, the hot sun had beat down upon them. She had told the asp several times to go to her leg, or he would be burnt to a crisp, as it felt like her delicate skin was. She didn't know this place, and judging by the complete lack of anyone she had seen for miles, no one did. All she had seen were sand dunes an the bones of the less fortunate...who seemed to have given up.
There was a smell upon the slight wind though, and she knew she had to keep going. Besides, surely some strong handsome brute would come along to help a delicate flower like herself? She batted her eyes and flicked her tail, giggling slightly. Goodness...she hadn't made an awful sound like that since she was a filly. The heat was getting to her quite obviously!
She snorted, and trudged onward through the sand as the scent grew stronger. At first what she saw...she thought was a mirage. She had heard the stories of the tricks the desert heat and dehydration could play on one's mind. Staying as hidden as she could amongst the sand dunes, she made her way slowly toward it. The snake would have none of it though. It sensed water, and it was going to go to it.
"Fine, you go and investigate. Don't get trampled, but if you do, make sure you leave a mark."
She smirked at the comment. The snake did not reply, but she knew it probably understood. They were a strange couple, but they worked well together ultimately. She watched the scene unfold as the two horses neared each other, stallions by their stature. The snake slithered toward them, the black of its body in sharp contrast to the almost white sand around them. Hopefully, they would not attack it, but leave it go to the water. If they did...they'd have to deal with Cleopatra, and though she was small...well, she had a few tricks up her sleeve. She stayed hidden from view though, letting the asp do its work in finding out what was going on.

Tefached, who was still wounded, hobbled over to where the strange stallion was slowly and cautiously. The horse was a bit smaller than he was, and had a brilliant royal blue coat that shimmered slightly in the intense desert sun. While Tefached was used to being a loner, never really interacting with others, this was a new land to him. It would be wise to group up and watch eachother's backs. Tef knew he would have to swallow his pride and just go with it. He stopped his tracks a good 5 or 6 feet away from the other horse and stood tall while still trying not to be intimidating. He gulped, then introduced himself as a friend and not foe. "Hey.. my name is Tefached. I've been travelling for days now and just came across this land. Who are you?"

Cobalt Fire was very surprised by the stallion's greetings. Where he was from, stallions did not get along at all. This, Tefached, obviously wanted to be friendly. Coby shook out his mane and stomped his feet in indecision, trying to decide what to say to this polite stranger. His sky blue eyes met Tef's deep blue ones. Slowly he relaxed. After a long moment of silence, he made his decision.
“I am called Cobalt Fire. I, well, followed the river here, and decided to check out the desert. You can rest with me at the oasis.” He motioned his head toward the trees. “There's fresh water, and a little grazing.”

Slowly, Coby turned away from the stallion and walked toward the trees. But in turning, he noticed something that had escaped his attention while he was talking to Tef. The wind briefly changed direction, and just for a moment he caught the scent of another horse. He froze, and looked around, ears swiveling, but he didn't see or hear anything. Already the scent was gone. Maybe he smeeled somthing else... Once again he shook his mane, bothered, and continued toward the trees. Alert, he kept his head high, and continued to listen. All he heard was Tef behind him and the slight breeze moving in the trees and whipping up the sand.
Coby didn't like mysteries... perhaps he should go out and look... but what if it was another stallion? What if he wasn't as polite as Tef? Coby let out a big sigh, and decided to let Tef know.
“I caught the scent of another horse for a moment, keep your eyes open, just in case.”
Trotting, Coby reached the trees and stood just outside of the shade, trying to let the warmth from the sun sooth his nerves.

A smirk played across the fae's kissers as the silly boys did not seem to even notice the snake slithering along in the sand, too busy gawking at each other and musing of their lives. Ah, what was life without men filled with nothing but hot air? She let loose a sigh, before a low hiss escaped her lips as the wind changed. She would be caught if the wind kept blowing in that direction. At least she was not in season, though perhaps that would have provided some entertainment. She stomped a hoof, but the sound was so dampened by the desert floor that nothing could be heard past the sand dune where she was hiding.

The asp slithered along the sand, careful to give the stallions a wide berth. While the sand might provide some protection if they decided to stomp him, it would still hurt mightily even if it didn't kill him. His tongue flickered in and out of his mouth as he made it to the water, testing the wind to see if the water seemed poison. It did not. He slipped into the water, basking in the cool refreshing nature of it, and swam through it, tail flicking back and forth as he rushed like a whip through the water to the far shore and slipped out, settling to where he could see them. There words were muffled, but judging by their actions...it seemed they were exchanging pleasantries. Not something he would expect of stallions, but then, perhaps Cleopatra could stir something up. She always did make things interesting.

Tefached raised his head high, his ears stood at attention once again. With his keen senses, he too caught the scent of another horse in the vicinity. He sniffed around some more, trying with all his might to determine a direction in which it came from but it was so faint that he had trouble envisioning a source. Tef was much too busy on alert to notice the creature that had slithered past him. Tefached shook his tired body to try and shake the feelings off and followed Coby to the trees, still keeping a distance from this stud he had just met. His mouth was just about bone dry due to the anxiety but he did not drink. He didn't feel comfortable enough to turn his back on anyone, not just Cobalt, but whoever else could possibly be out there. The land was strange, there were strange new horses. Tefached was more than comfortable with being a loner but it was at this time that he missed his brother more than ever.

Tefached was just about as calm as he'll ever be. His sanity is like a switch, and it's scary how fast that switch flips. Just like his past life, one minute he is a kind god, and the next he sets the world ablaze.

Coby trotted around the outside of the oasis, looking out into the dunes. He glanced at Tef, and decided the stallion could take care of himself. Carefully Coby made his way up the closest sand dune. He knew the likelihood of him spotting anyone was slim. The tall dunes and deep valleys between provided so many places for things to hide. But he had to take a look, had to know. Otherwise, it would nag him in the back of his mind and he wouldn't be able to rest. Climbing up the steep sand was much more difficult than he thought; on his way into the desert he had simply stayed in the valleys, too tired to climb. With every step, his hooves slid down in the sand, making it twice as much work as a regular grass hill. Half way up, he stopped to rest and looked around. He couldn't see much better from here than down at the oasis. Is climbing all the way up really worth it? I still don't have all my strength back. Don't want to appear weak though... With a heavy sigh Coby continued upward. When he finally reached the top, he saw what he expected: nothing but sand. The wind here at the top was stronger, and the blown sand stung against his legs. Hanging his head in defeat, he turned and carefully made his way back down.

It was now afternoon, and as much as Coby loved the heat, the sun was becoming rather unbearable. Once clear of the dune, he trotted to the water to drink, the shade giving him relief. About to lower his lips into the pool, movement in the corner of his eye made him freeze. Watching him with lidless eyes was a snake, so close Coby could have stepped on him! With a whinny Coby jumped back, hoping to avoid being bitten.

She snorted as the wind blew and the sand tickled at her nares. She watched as the stallions spoke, but seemed not to have any anger or fight between the two of them...utterly boring pair of studs if ever there was one. None the less, her ears flicked to their words as they seemed to have lowered their voices even further perhaps having caught her scent. She tensed as the stallion moved closer, taking a step closer to the sand dune she hid behind. As he reached the top, she held her breath awaiting him to spot her...but no such thing happened.
As the winds shifted, it seemed he lost her trail, and a sigh of relief washed over her. She really did not feel like being claimed or any such thing by a boring stallion, and she also really didn't feel like killing anyone today. He retreated toward the oasis once more, leaving her to her own devices.
As she watched him return there, she scanned the area for the asp, who now sat by the water's edge. It seemed the stallion was heading straight for him, whether he knew it or not. She could not help but stifle a giggle as she awaited whatever was to come.

As Coby approached the snake, it coiled up but did not spread out its hood just yet. It did not have an impressive hood as a king cobra did, but it had some of one. His tongue flicked in and out quickly as the stallion seemed to approach with no intent, and his eyes stayed trained upon him. It appeared, that even just laying there, was enough to scare the stallion into jumping sideways.

Seeing this, Cleopatra could no longer hold the giggle in, and it erupted from her rather loudly. There was no way she could continue hiding any longer, having made such a horrendous noise...and if they were afraid of the snake then they should be fine to leave her alone. She made her way from around the sand dune, revealing herself to them. The light from the sun caught on her hooves and her horn, making it appear to glow. Her coat shimmered with the same affect as she arched her nape but kept her head held high, one eye staying trained on the one stallion and the other eye on the other stallion as she made no rush to meet them, carefully placing each petite hoof so that she wouldn't slip. As her mother had always told her, it was always about the presentation.
The asp slithered toward Coby, flicking its tongue as it slithered by him, ignoring him completely for the little mare. She lowered her head to it as it approached, but her eyes looked up to the stallion.
"Thank you, sir, for not stepping on my asp."
The words were soft, a gentle breeze upon the wind. The asp flicked its tongue against her nose, wrapping around her muzzle before climbing up her nose and resting, finally, upon the top of her head-draped around her ears and horn and laying its head upon the jewel at the base. Once it was settled, she raised her head, batting her eyes to the two stallions.
"I seem to have lost my way...what is this place? Is this the valley of the Forgotten I have heard such stories about?"

Tefached's head snapped up as soon as he heard the joyful sound of the mare's giggles echoing through the land. He perked up instantly and stepped out of the shade to get a closer look of the source. The beads in his mane and buck skull fastened upon his head made a slight rattling sound due to the speed in which he jerked his head up to the noise. Tef noticed the new mare's companion and thought about his own Osprey. He looked up to the sky and made a strange sounding noise for a horse, a call of sorts.. one that echoed just a bit. He was reminded once again and trying something he had been trying for months. His little friend had been missing for a couple months now, which isn't too unusual but still mildly worrying.

The bone clad stud had made note that there was no harm meant by the newcomer, he calmly stepped towards the two horses who were now conversing. The spotted stud acknowledged this horse's beauty but he, himself, wasn't too taken aback by it. He was never really interested in mares anyways. Her dappled coat shimmering in the deep sunlight, the intriguing hues of blue in her eyes, it all had no romantic effect on him.

"It seems we've all just come across this land..."
The stud's voice grumbled as he spoke, almost thunderous due to both his size and stature, a polar opposite to the small mare's supple words. He was never truly one to make conversation.
It was an odd group, two stallions and a mare, but Tefached thought it could work. Especially with all of the horses being lost together. It had to work if they wanted to make it out alive.

--

Miles and miles away, the call echoed through the woods Tefached had called home just a mere week ago. The Osprey called back to no avail. The direction of the winds were not in his favor.. his meek sound could not be carried into the valley. The bird leaped off of his perch in a tree that seemed almost 100 feet off the ground and began to soar into the deep blue sky towards the source of the odd whinny in search of his equine companion.

[Sorry it took me so long to post!]

Cobalt was a bit embarrassed that the mare had seen him jump, which set him a bit on edge. Her beauty In the sunlight did nothing to distract him from his anger. The mares of his old herd had laughed when he had failed his challenge against the herd leader. It made him feel like a little colt again. Small flames licked around his hooves, barely noticeable against the brightness of the sand. He took a deep breath, and attempted to calm down while Nef answered her. As the asp might be a bit embarrassing to speak of, he decided to ignore it. He wasn't afraid of snakes, after all, just caught by surprise. He stomped the sand, trying to release the edginess he felt.

Narrowing his eyes at the mare in clear annoyance, he entered the conversation, “I really don't know what place this is either. Just kind of stumbled in here. Although I like the heat, I imagine you both don't want to stay here. This is a good size oasis, but not sure if there is enough grazing for all of us. We should move on. We can head over to the river and follow it north. I passed some decent lands on my way down.”

Naturally Coby placed himself as leader of their group. It is what he always wanted: to lead a herd. The three of them weren't much of a herd, but it was a start. Tef seemed willing to let him lead, but what of this mare? Which reminded him...

“By the way, what is your name, mare? I am Cobalt Fire, but you may called me Coby, if you wish.” Coby pawed and arched his neck, showing off a bit. He didn't look his best, with the sand dust dulling his coat, and dirty mane and tail from the river. He really wished he had washed in the pool, but too late now. “And this is Tefached.” Coby motioned towards Tef.
