UGH I am so proud of this turn out.

This is for a Jockey Club HARPG on dA, and is of my stallion, Eli Eli at the Colin Stakes. How do you think it turned out? (pls ignore the grass/dirt shadows bc I didn't try on those lulz)

Here's the story that goes along with it:

" "The clouds rumbled as Eli took his first step onto the track. This was Eli’s first race, but he knew what he was here to do - win. Months and months of cold sweat and early mornings paid off, for the crowd knew nothing of Eli, and he couldn’t wait to stun them.

“Easy boy, we’ve got this!” Eli’s jockey, Rachel, patted him on the shoulder. His muscles rippled under the sun’s rays with each step as he let out a cry of dignity. Eli began prancing his way across the track as Rachel guided him to the starting gates. There, a small man dressed in slacks and a green sweater took hold of Eli’s reins and guided him into the dark, metal starting gate. Once locked in, Eli began to panic. He kicked frantically at the sides of the gates.

“Shh, it’s alright Eli. We’ve done this a thousand times.” Rachel’s words traveled through Eli’s bones and soothed him in a way no one else could. He paused, watching as the other horses loaded into the gates. Eli was the only rookie here, and he knew it. The other horses stood calm, awaiting their fellow competitors, and their sense of pride grew on Eli.

Eli’s attention turned to the tug at his mane. Eli could sense Rachel’s fright, and let out a short nicker to let her know he was alright.

“Easyyy, boyyy, everything’s gonna be alright.”

Eli struggled to make out the distant words of an almost robot-like speaker,

“The riders are in the starting gate.” Rachel tightened her grip on Eli’s reins and Eli felt her weight shift in the saddle as she brought herself into two-point. With the reins in her right hand, Rachel reached down and stroked Eli’s neck, whispering sweet nothings into his ear.

“We’ve got this, Eli, don’t you worry. We’re gonna show them what we’re all about.”

Eli jumped as the deafening sound of a bell rang and the metal gates flung open. They were off! Eli took off late as his body trembled from the adrenaline that was overcoming his body. He pushed himself out of the starting gate with his hind legs and began to gallop faster than he had ever galloped before.

Rachel lashed Eli with her crop in an attempt to catch him up to the other horses. The cold wind bit at her face as they flew across the track, and she struggled to hang on to her reins. She was an inexperienced jockey, having never raced before, but her connection with Eli made her as confident as any good jockey would be.

As they rounded the first turn, dirt from the horse’s in front of Rachel and Eli smacked their faces, causing Rachel great frustration. This isn’t what their first race was supposed to feel like, and so, Rachel did something about it.

“Come on, Eli! Let’s go!” she lashed at his hindquarters once, twice, three times in attempt to egg Eli on.

Eli was confused. What was hitting him so hard? Eli had never felt a burning sensation so strong before. Whatever the reason, the lashes stung Eli’s side. He began to push himself faster and faster in attempt to get away from the powerful stings, and suddenly, the lashing stopped. Just then, Eli began to catch up to the other horses. He was now side by side with the leaders, and boy was he excited.

“Atta boy! That’s it!”

Eli’s ears twitched with each of Rachel’s words for he couldn’t quite understand them due to the whistling of the wind.

Around the second turn they went, and Eli felt the other horses beginning to push themselves harder, so he did the same. Down the stretch they went, and the Eli was neck and neck with the other two leaders. Eli wanted to win, that’s what he was here for, so he pushed himself even HARDER in attempt to outrun them. He was becoming tired and running out of breath, but he knew his job was to win that race, so he pushed his breathing aside and launched himself off of his hind legs and began to run even faster. As the rounded the final turn, Eli overcame the leaders and was ahead, but only by a length. He knew he couldn’t afford to drop his current speed, as the other horses were gaining quick, and so, with every stride he continued to push himself even faster.

They were only ten lengths away from the finish line, and Rachel could tell Eli was determined to win…"

I'll be finishing the story once I learn what our placing is, for anyone who's interested :)
