My best tag yet?

#40580 Posted on 2016-05-24 09:58:12

Heyo. Thanks for clicking. ^.^

Over the course of the past three days, I have been working very hard on a first tag for my new boy, Grimlym! All the shading was done with 1 pt brush lol.

Thoughts? I'm open for critique if there's anything obvious I can improve on. :D

(p.s. I HAVE OFFICIALLY CHANGED MY USER YAY. you can still call me tree tho)

Magic, all it takes is practice! ;D I read some tutorials for this but honestly I ended up scrapping them and winging it lol. Just looks at loads of sweaty bay horses for references. XD (No tracing though haha..)

I think this is very good for a first go at linelessness (nice word right?), but I would advise a couple things on the shading. The first is to maintain consistency with the contrast between the lightest and darkest areas - there are places on the horse (for instance the neck and cheek) that have very high contrast, but as you move further down towards the body of the horse some of that strong definition is lost.

The second is to generally look at examples for play of light/shadow on anything and everything, so you can get a good feel for how certain shapes look depending on the lighting situation. The cheek on your horse, for example, is very bright on the outer edge but it is quite dark near the middle, which gives it the appearance of being sunken in, or concave, rather than convex. It can help to practice drawing things straight from life, in particular, in order to develop an overall sense of lighting, which you will then be able to transfer into any of your art.

River, I can see what you mean about the lighting problem. o.o Thank you for the advice!

If I'm honest, I was more concerned about making it look alright without the lines than focusing on realism. ^.^; Will deffo look at more refs for the next one haha.

Part of going lineless is having to use light and shadow to define the areas that would usually have been clarified by the lines, which is both prettier and harder at the same time. |D

The clarity of the overall outline of the horse is very good though, which is important to making a lineless tag look crisp and not fuzzy. The shading in the mane despite being a little bit light is very nice too. Overall very cute - I think with your ideas and persistence you could go places. c:
