gene description query

#201308 Posted on 2019-03-16 10:12:47

My beautiful silver grullo filly was born today
I wondered why there was a difference in the descriptions in her genes as she has mealy and dun which are not stated - I presume dun comes into her grullo colouring but am not sure.  Has the roan made her mealy patterning disappear.  Just trying to understand.  I found a horse of the same breed with similar gene pool for comparison.

The difference is that the first horse is a bay base - mealy comes from the pangare marking, which only shows on base coats with the Agouti gene (the Aa you see there) aka pangare only shows on bay or chestnut horses. The second horse carries pangare, but with the black base coat the pangare doesn't show, therefore the horse isn't mealy. The horse's coat color ends up being grullo rather than black because of the dun gene (if you mess around in the custom horse creator you can see all of this in action). The first horse is also dunskin specifically, rather than classic dun, because of the cream gene.
