Chestnut Friesians

#238300 Posted on 2021-04-20 16:14:58

Hello, i have a geno question on the chestnuts in Friesians. I know EE is black and will automatically pass it on down to the offspring if bred with another EE. I also know Ee has the chance of passing it on if breed to ee

my question is what's the percent chance of removing black all together to get the Friesian color? so if i bred an EE to an ee - an already chestnut Friesian - whats my chances of producing a chestnut foal?

and FF is the geno for chestnut correct? I see FF on all my Friesians so i'm just making sure its chestnut

EE is black yes, ee is chestnut. E is a dominant gene, so if it is present it will always create black hairs. Ee will always be a black in Friesians as they have no agouti (A) gene.

In order to produce a chestnut foal you need to breed Ee to another Ee or a chestnut. Ee x Ee will be a 50% chance of being Ee and 25% chance of being either EE or ee.  Ee x ee will be a 25% chance of Ee and 75% chance of ee.

FF means no flaxen, nothing to do with chestnut.

Ohh okay i thought FF was chestnut and was wondering why all mine had it in their geno like that but wasn't going to question it xD

Thank you for answering! I'm trying to breed in some chestnut colors later on and have bought 2 chestnut mares to breed to older generations :)
