Story of Bittersweet Surprise

The stable was actively recruiting more Shetlands into its increasingly expanding project of racing Shetlands. Drawn to a horse auction in the Margaret River region of Western Australia, Pine View Stables immediately spotted a peculiar and playful colt. When we first laid eyes on Bittersweet Surprise (or Barry as he was later nicknamed) was a gangly-looking foal, with legs too long for his body and a deep barrel suitable for racing. His conformation was unimpressive but his calm attitude and focused attention on us, as we moved towards the sale pen was to be admired. Despite all the hustle and bustle of the people and horses.

We knew that with some dedication and training we would have a brilliant racehorse. We took our place once the auction started, and not long after, the mischievous pony came trotting into the sale pen dragging his handler behind him. We managed to bid on him for only $1000, which we considered a bargain.

Once he was back at the stable we very quickly noticed his aptitude for racing. Over time the success of Bittersweet Surprise as a racehorse was something that was amusing to spectators. However, no one could have guessed how much our little pony would achieve.

After a successful racing career of over 300 placings and over $40,000 in prize money, we decided to breed him to our two best mares Making Headlines and Come Dance With Me. Both of them had an impressive showing career.

We managed to breed four foals, all of whom were mares. A Sooty Seal Brown Cream Dun, we named Bittersweet Headlines, a Silver Smokey Black named Come And Surprise Me, a Palomino called All Bets Are Off, and finally Rush Of Stars a Silver Sable Cream Champagne Dun.

It was clear very early on, that all the foals would achieve the same success if not better than their sire. Due to this, we decided to keep the foals and use their bloodlines to continue breeding outstanding racehorses. Rush Of Stars not only earned over $60,000 but also placed in over 400 shows, proving that his line would continue making champions.

Due to his success as a stud and champion racehorse, Bittersweet Headlines has since been retired and lives his days comfortably in the pastures of Pine View Stables. His line continues to this day and continues to showcase his aptitude for racing.
