Chance
Alright Chance, don't blow it. He took a deep breath before heading up the steps. Chance was just glad he didn't freeze when he got up there, instead walking to the microphone and glancing around. There was a stool off to the side, so he pulled it up and sat down, quickly opening his guitar case and pulled the instrument out. He looked up at the guy running this thing. "My name's Chance Robinson. I - uh - I write songs that I play on the guitar. I usually sing them too." He swallowed and glanced at his guitar momentarily. "So, um, I'm going to do one I wrote." He didn't give himself time to think and instead began the song, fingers gliding over the strings and after the instrumental intro singing the opening lyrics. His late friend's face flashed in his mind, a proud grin on her face. "You wrote that?" He could perfectly recall Raina's voice from the first time they met.

Lynn

Lynn stood there for a second and then decided to go and sit on one of the auditorium seats propping up her feet on the one in front of her. She took out her sketchbook to doodle a bit to pass the time and listened to the rest of the auditions

Chance
He finished the song, eyes a little watery like they always got when he played this. Man, he missed Raina. She had been one of his best friends, beside Jay. The two were "equal in bestness," as the trio had once said. She and him would sneak out at night to mimic animal calls outside Jay's house and try not to laugh the next day when he would complain about the cats, or the dogs, or the geese, ir whatever they had portrayed. They had gone on many an adventure, the threesome. Laughed. Cried. Joked. Contemplated. But now Raina was gone, her body six feet under. And his other best friend had moved away, leaving Chance alone with his thoughts. Raina had died six months ago, but he still often thought he would see her somewhere but it was never her, just a shadow of her, an illusion. Chance blinked rapidly to clear his eyes. All this had gone through his head in a matter of moments.

Mason
"Well don't cry over it," he muttered, adding another line of notes: Chance, good voice, guitar, too emotional... He paused, thinking over what he'd written before crossing out 'too', leaving 'emotional' by itself. It's just a song. He'll need to get used to playing it over and over without crying like a wimp. But... "I can work with that. Go join her," he instructed, nodding his head towards Lynn.

Chance
He nodded and packed up his guitar, climbing down the stage steps and walking over to where Lynn sat, brushing at his eyes to catch the tears before they fell. Chance sank into a seat and dug a small ringed notebook and a pencil from an outside pocket on his guitar case, flipping it open to a blank page. Hey, Raina. I tried out for the band thing I told you about last time. I made it in. I just finished my audition approximately thirty seconds ago and am sitting nearby to listen to the rest of the auditions. I did the song I wrote for you. I wish you were here. Tell Jay about it, alright? I still haven't been able to get ahold of him. Mom offered to go out for ice cream if I made it in, but I can't do that yet. That used to be our thing. Anyway, I don't want to look too weird sitting here writing in a notebook so until next time something interesting happens or I need to write. - Chance.
The notebook was something his therapist had recommended he give a try, and he found it did help a little bit. Enough that he had continued to do it. He had filled up a notebook already, which he had tucked into a box of some mementos. Chance tucked the notebook back into his guitar case with the pencil and looked back at the stage.

Lynn

Lynn looked up from her sketchbook as the new kid, whom she thought was called Chance, sat next to her. He seemed pretty intent on writing in his notebook, so she waited until he was done, not wanting to bother him. After a few minutes, Chance tucked the notebook back in his guitar case.
“Hey, that was pretty cool” she said

Chance
His gaze had drifted to the clouds rolling past in the sky and his thoughts were somewhere, he wasn't sure, when Lynn spoke. He jumped a little then turned a small smile her way. "Thanks. Yours too."

After a couple more auditions and a bunch more insults - 'We don't give out participation awards here', 'Nice try, hipster', 'Get lost, punk', 'Is that a xylophone?', etc. - the line had reached its end. He looked down at Outlaw. "Well, cowgirl? Are you gonna play or not?"

Outlaw
In reply to Mason she calmly went onto the stage and undid the patches on what looked like a banjo case to reveal her electric guitar. She had made it like that just for the looks on people’s faces. She set it all up then said into the mike “Gold, originally by JAWS” then started to play. The dog stayed sitting next to her feet as she played, fingers humming expertly over the strings.

He nodded along to the music, finishing up her line of notes - Outlaw, electric guitar, very good but not as good as me - before asking a question. "Can you play any other songs? I'm just curious."

"Know anything by Nirvana? They were pretty cool," he asked, eyeing her guitar, getting lost in memories. Man, those were some fun times. It'll be nice to be in a band again. Don't know what I'll play, though. I should probably start to think about that.

"Well don't just stand there, then. Are you gonna play or not? I mean, you're in and all, but if you wanna continue to impress me, you're gonna have to be ready to do what I say without hesitation... when it comes to music, that is. I really made it sound like I'm gonna stab you in your sleep or something if you didn't play a song, didn't I? Oh well. Wouldn't be the first time."
